Job Summary

As a CRO III (Control Room Operator Level III) at Manchester Street Station, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the safe and efficient operation of our facility. Your primary responsibility will be to operate and monitor all major components of this Combined Cycle power plant, while adhering to established protocols (including safety and compliance), as well as operational procedures. This position is in a bargaining unit represented by the Utility Workers of America/AFL-CIO and Local 310 BUW Council UWUA, AFL-CIO.



Job Description

Duties to include, but are not limited to:

  • Monitors and operates all major and auxiliary equipment and systems associated with a combined cycle steam powered electric generating station. Performs start-ups, shutdowns and emergency procedures as necessary for safe equipment operations
  • Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) and always adhere to safety guidelines to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Complies with all safety, NERC, and environmental regulations.
  • Observes, records and interprets indications from instrumentation and control systems during operational rounds
  • Performs functional testing of plant systems and components. Interprets acceptability of data in comparison with established standards or sound power plant practices. Determines the need for and performs routine operational tests and adjustments on all power plant systems and components as required.
  • Assists in the investigation of plant problems, incidents, accidents and unusual events, and provides analyses, recommendations, reports and appropriate follow-up plans.
  • Performs switching and tagging and housekeeping duties as required.
  • Maintains logs, records, and data sheets; prepares reports, trends and time sheets, material requisitions, work orders, and other administrative documents related to the business of power and steam production.
  • Provides advice and counsel to the Operations Manager and Lead Operators regarding technical and administrative conduct and shift operations.
  • Communicates with and represents the Company in its relations and communications with contractors and other non-Company personnel.
  • Qualifies to perform station lockout/tagout procedures
  • Supports Chemistry functions, as needed as agreed upon with the union.
  • Conduct lockout tagout procedures to isolate equipment and energy sources during maintenance activities, ensuring the safety of maintenance personnel.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned (included, but not limited to, pre-job briefs, shift turnover, issuing permits, etc.)

The hourly rate for this position is $50.74

This position requires the ability to work 12 consecutive hours of work on a rotating shift.

Must be willing to work overtime as required.


Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • A City of Providence Boiler Operator License upon award of the position and a City of Providence Stationary Engineer’s License within one year.
  • Minimum of three years of operations experience.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • All applicants must be a successful candidate on the Plant Operator Selection System/Power Plant Operations and Maintenance (POSS / MASS) program in order to be considered a candidate for this position. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Must successfully complete all required Control Room Operator training.
  • Ability in the following areas; basic math, electricity, chemistry and power plant physical sciences; print reading; communication skills. Competency is demonstrated through satisfactory completion of accredited courses. Company courses or equivalency exams
  • Ability to perform technical troubleshooting, including documenting conditions in the Maintenance Management System.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally using telephone and PA system.
  • Strong commitment to safety and the ability to follow safety protocols and guidelines.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team and communicate clearly with team members.
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to follow instructions precisely.


Work Environment:

  • Work on ladders, work at heights, work in high noise and/or climate temperature extremes, work near high voltage and/or rapidly rotating equipment and work in cramped and/or confined positions with occasional heavy lifting
  • Occasional work with toxic chemicals including but not limited to solvents, acids, and caustics.


Physical Abilities:

  • Physical work in atmospheric conditions where fumes, dust and gases are present.
  • Ability to work rotating shifts
  • Sufficient physical strength to operate manual valves. Sufficient physical endurance for repetitive motions, such as manual valve operation and barrel moving.
  • Cramped working conditions requiring overall flexibility, manual dexterity and adequate hand-eye coordination.
  • Physical stamina and the ability to work in a demanding environment, including standing for extended periods, climbing stairs, and lifting heavy objects when required.
