Machining Support Technician
Position Summary
The Machining Support Technician is responsible for operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting production equipment within a machining work cell or standalone environment. This includes CNC and manual machines, washers, leak testers, Poka-Yoke systems, sensors, lasers, and related equipment. The role provides hands-on technical support while helping ensure safety, quality, productivity, and continuous improvement goals are met.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate and start up CNC, manual, and other production equipment.
- Make tooling and machine adjustments to maintain parts within customer specifications.
- Monitor tool wear and perform tool changes for cutters, drills, taps, inserts, and other tooling.
- Troubleshoot machine faults, tooling issues, leak testers, sensors, lasers, and Poka-Yoke systems.
- Maintain leak testers, including replacement of seals, O-rings, and related components.
- Perform visual inspections and use precision measuring equipment such as micrometers, calipers, indicators, and gauges.
- Read and interpret blueprints, quality inspection requirements, dimension/gage reports, and work instructions.
- Perform and document Total Productive Maintenance (TPM), including lubrication, filter changes, cleaning, and fluid-level checks.
- Maintain accurate production, quality, scrap, downtime, and count records.
- Review and maintain quality documentation and ensure work instructions are accurate and current.
- Partner with Maintenance and Process Engineering to troubleshoot issues and improve processes.
- Support cost-reduction, waste-elimination, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Train, coach, and transfer knowledge to team members and new employees on equipment and processes.
- Maintain a safe, clean, and organized work area while following all safety and 5S standards.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Four or more years of machining experience preferred.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.
- Ability to read and understand blueprints, work instructions, and quality documentation.
- Strong shop math skills, including fractions, decimals, and English/metric measurements.
- Experience using precision measuring equipment such as micrometers, calipers, and indicators.
- Ability to identify tool wear and determine when tooling changes or machine adjustments are required.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated leadership, training, coaching, and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to work independently and collaborate effectively with Engineering, Maintenance, Quality, and Production teams.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
- Heavy manufacturing environment with exposure to machinery, chemicals, noise, ergonomic hazards, and powered industrial vehicle traffic.
- Ability to regularly stand, walk, bend, stoop, reach, and move throughout the manufacturing facility.
- Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to wear required PPE, including safety glasses, hearing protection, safety-toe shoes, and hand protection.
