Certified Substance Abuse Counselor
Job Description
MUST be able to Teach A Spanish Class
2 year experience in outpatient IOP required.
• Facilitate evidence-based group counseling sessions including psychoeducation, process groups, and skills training (CBT, DBT, MI, relapse prevention, and trauma-informed interventions)
• Provide individual counseling sessions based on each client's treatment plan and clinical needs
• Conduct or assist with biopsychosocial assessments, ASAM level-of-care screenings, and intake documentation
• Develop, implement, and update individualized treatment plans collaboratively with each client
• Write clear, complete, and timely progress notes for all services rendered — same day or next business day
• Develop and document continuing care and discharge plans for all clients
• Monitor and document client attendance, participation, and peer-support meeting compliance
• Conduct and document risk and safety assessments; develop safety plans when clinically indicated
• Administer and document UA/drug screening per clinical protocol (CLN-014)
• Coordinate referrals to medical, mental health, social service, and community resources with appropriate authorization
• Participate in individual supervision, group supervision, team meetings, and required trainings
• Maintain client records in compliance with DHCS standards, HIPAA, and 42 CFR Part 2
• Adhere to professional ethics, confidentiality, and program code of conduct at all times
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS — EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
• Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADC-I, CADC-II, CATC-I through CATC-IV) or registered counselor actively pursuing certification, or licensed mental health professional (LCSW, LMFT, LPCC)
• Meets all DHCS credentialing and scope-of-practice requirements for the services provided
• Minimum one (1) year of experience in substance use disorder counseling, behavioral health, or related human services preferred
• Knowledge of addiction as a disease, evidence-based SUD treatment practices, ASAM criteria, and trauma-informed care
• Experience facilitating group therapy preferred
REQUIRED LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS & CLEARANCES
• Current California counselor certification (CADC, CATC) or active registration with certifying body — copy on file
• OR current California clinical license (LCSW, LMFT, LPCC) or registered associate status
• NPI number (if billing for services)
• Not excluded from OIG, SAM.gov, or Medi-Cal provider databases
• Background check clearance per HR-003
• TB screening clearance per HR-004
• Current CPR/First Aid certification per HR-005
• HIPAA and 42 CFR Part 2 training completed upon hire and annually
• Mandated reporter training completed upon hire and annually
• Infectious disease / infection control training within 6 months of hire
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

• Proficiency in evidence-based interventions: CBT, DBT, Motivational Interviewing, relapse prevention, and trauma-informed care
• Strong group facilitation, active listening, and therapeutic communication skills
• Ability to write clear, concise, clinically sound documentation including treatment plans and progress notes
• Working knowledge of DHCS clinical documentation requirements and ASAM-based clinical decision making
• Ability to maintain appropriate therapeutic boundaries and professional conduct at all times
• Cultural humility and ability to work effectively with diverse client populations
New Pathway Recovery IOP LLC (NPR) is a DHCS-certified ASAM Level 2.1 Intensive Outpatient Program located in Dublin, CA, opening September 1, 2026. We serve adults in the Tri-Valley area with substance use and co-occurring disorders through Morning, Afternoon, and Evening tracks held Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday — including a Spanish-language morning track. NPR accepts commercial insurance and private-pay clients and is designated Dual Diagnosis Capable (DDC).
