Location: Millbury, Massachusetts
Job Type: Full-Time
Experience: Entry-Level / Will Train

Build a Career in Heat Treat Manufacturing Quality — We Will Train You

County Heat Treat is looking for a dependable, detail-oriented Quality Control Technician to join our operation.

Previous heat treating or metallurgical laboratory experience is not required. We are willing to train the right person. If you are mechanically inclined, comfortable working with computers and basic measuring equipment, pay attention to details, and want to learn valuable technical skills, we encourage you to apply.

This is a hands-on position combining quality testing, laboratory work, documentation, and production support. You will learn how to test metal parts after heat treatment, prepare samples, perform laboratory testing, document results, and help ensure customer requirements are met.

This is a great opportunity for someone looking to build a long-term career in manufacturing, quality control, inspection, or laboratory testing.

What You'll Do

Your day-to-day responsibilities will include:

  • Perform hardness testing on heat-treated metal parts using various hardness testing equipment
  • Record test results accurately and prepare hardness and quality reports
  • Prepare metal samples for hardness testing and laboratory evaluation, including cutting, mounting, grinding, polishing, and related preparation
  • Perform laboratory testing to evaluate case depth and other heat-treatment results
  • Assist with K-Step testing and sample preparation
  • Read and follow customer specifications, work instructions, job travelers, and testing requirements
  • Verify that testing results meet applicable customer and process requirements
  • Maintain accurate testing records and documentation
  • Assist with calibration checks and proper care of laboratory and testing equipment
  • Assist with System Accuracy Tests (SAT) and Temperature Uniformity Surveys (TUS) as needed
  • Identify unusual or nonconforming test results and bring them to the appropriate person's attention
  • Work with production personnel to resolve testing or processing questions
  • Provide hands-on support to the production floor when needed
  • Communicate professionally with customers when clarification or additional information is needed regarding testing or job requirements
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe laboratory/work area
  • Follow company quality procedures and safety requirements
  • Learn additional quality-control and heat-treatment processes as your experience grows

What We're Looking For

You do not need previous heat-treating experience. We are looking for someone with the right attitude, attention to detail, and willingness to learn.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Comfortable working with numbers and basic math
  • Comfortable using computers and entering information accurately
  • Able to follow written procedures and detailed instructions
  • Good organizational and recordkeeping skills
  • Dependable and able to work independently after training
  • Comfortable working in both a laboratory and manufacturing environment
  • Able to communicate clearly and professionally with coworkers and customers
  • Willingness to learn new testing equipment, procedures, and technical skills

Helpful Experience — But Not Required

We encourage you to apply if you have experience in any of the following areas, even if you have never worked in heat treating:

  • Quality control or quality inspection
  • Manufacturing or machine shop environments
  • Laboratory or testing work
  • Hardness testing
  • Metallography or sample preparation
  • CNC machining or metalworking
  • Mechanical inspection
  • Measuring instruments such as calipers or micrometers
  • Aerospace, automotive, medical, or precision manufacturing
  • Technical, vocational, or trade-school coursework

Don't have this experience? That's okay. We provide hands-on training for the right candidate.

What You'll Learn

This position provides an opportunity to develop valuable technical skills, including:

  • Hardness testing of metals
  • Heat-treatment quality inspection
  • Metallurgical sample preparation
  • Case-depth evaluation
  • Laboratory testing methods
  • Quality documentation and reporting
  • Understanding customer specifications
  • SAT and TUS testing
  • Heat-treatment processes and quality requirements

As you gain experience, there will be opportunities to take on additional responsibilities and expand your knowledge of heat treatment, metallurgy, quality control, and manufacturing.

Who Will Do Well in This Position?

You may be a great fit if you are someone who:

  • Notices small details
  • Likes hands-on technical work
  • Enjoys figuring out whether something meets specifications
  • Takes pride in doing work correctly
  • Is comfortable switching between computer work and hands-on testing
  • Wants to learn a skilled technical profession
  • Is dependable and takes responsibility for their work
  • Wants a stable, full-time position where you can grow your skills
