Quality Engineer

The Quality Engineer is responsible for ensuring that manufactured products meet customer requirements, engineering drawings, specifications, and applicable quality standards. A primary responsibility of this position is the inspection and verification of manufactured parts to engineering drawings (“print”), including dimensions, tolerances, GD&T, materials, finishes, and other specified requirements. The Quality Engineer will work closely with Manufacturing and Engineering to identify, resolve, and prevent quality issues.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Inspect manufactured parts to engineering drawings, specifications, and customer requirements using appropriate inspection methods and equipment.
- Perform first-piece, in-process, final, and receiving inspections as required.
- Read and interpret engineering drawings, GD&T, tolerances, notes, material requirements, and specifications.
- Use precision measuring equipment including calipers, micrometers, height gauges, indicators, gauges, optical equipment, CMMs, and other inspection tools as applicable.
- Document inspection results and maintain accurate quality records.
- Identify, document, and communicate nonconforming material and assist with disposition.
- Investigate quality problems and perform root-cause analysis using tools such as 5-Why, Fishbone, and Pareto analysis.
- Lead or support corrective and preventive actions and verify their effectiveness.
- Work with Manufacturing and Engineering to resolve dimensional, process, and workmanship issues.
- Develop and improve inspection plans, inspection procedures, and sampling methods.
- Support process capability studies, SPC, and continuous improvement activities.
- Monitor quality trends and work to reduce scrap, rework, and customer complaints.
- Maintain inspection equipment and ensure measuring equipment is properly calibrated.
- Support supplier quality, incoming inspection, customer complaints, and supplier corrective actions.
- Support internal and external quality audits and maintain compliance with applicable quality standards.
- Participate in new product introduction, process changes, and production-readiness activities.
- Promote a strong culture of quality throughout the manufacturing operation.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Quality, Mechanical, Manufacturing, Industrial Engineering, or related field; equivalent experience may be considered.
- Manufacturing experience, preferably in machining or precision manufacturing.
- Demonstrated ability to inspect parts to engineering drawings and specified tolerances.
- Strong understanding of engineering drawings and GD&T.
- Experience with precision inspection and measurement equipment.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, documentation, and communication skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
Preferred Qualifications:
- CNC machining or precision manufacturing experience.
- CMM experience.
- Experience with SPC, process capability, and corrective action systems.
- Knowledge of ISO 9001 or other applicable quality standards.
- ASQ Certified Quality Engineer (CQE) or similar certification.
- Experience with ERP/MRP or quality management systems.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to work on the manufacturing floor, stand/walk for extended periods, safely handle inspection samples and components, and perform detailed inspections using precision measurement equipment.
This position requires a hands-on approach to quality and includes regular inspection of manufactured parts to engineering drawings, specifications, and customer requirements.
