Machinest/Toolmaker
Job Description
Part-Time CNC Machinist / Toolmaker
Position Summary
We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Part-Time CNC Machinist / Toolmaker to support the fabrication of precision components, tooling, and fixtures used in the development and manufacturing of high-performance Brushless DC (BLDC) motors. This role is responsible for producing low-volume, high-precision parts through CNC machining, laser cutting, and manual fabrication techniques while maintaining exceptional quality and accuracy.
The ideal candidate is an experienced machinist who enjoys prototype and small-batch manufacturing, takes pride in precision craftsmanship, and can work independently in a fast-paced engineering environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Set up, program (as required), and operate mini CNC mills, lathes, and laser cutting equipment to manufacture precision components within specified tolerances.
- Fabricate custom tooling, assembly fixtures, winding mandrels, compression fixtures, and production aids to support engineering and manufacturing operations.
- Perform secondary machining operations including drilling, tapping, reaming, deburring, surface finishing, and precision fitting.
- Interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, CAD models, and GD&T specifications to produce high-quality parts.
- Select appropriate tooling, workholding methods, cutting speeds, and feeds for various materials including aluminum, steel, stainless steel, and engineered plastics.
- Inspect completed components using precision measuring equipment to verify dimensional accuracy and quality requirements.
- Perform routine preventive maintenance, cleaning, and minor troubleshooting of CNC machines, laser cutters, and shop equipment.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe machine shop environment while following all applicable safety procedures.
- Collaborate with engineering personnel to improve manufacturability and tooling efficiency.
- Support prototype development and continuous process improvement initiatives.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent; technical or vocational machining education preferred.
- Minimum 2–5 years of hands-on CNC machining experience.
- Experience operating CNC mills, routers, or lathes in a precision manufacturing environment.
- Working knowledge of machining principles including speeds, feeds, cutting tools, workholding, and machining strategies.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and GD&T.
- Experience using precision inspection equipment including calipers, micrometers, height gauges, and indicators.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience operating commercial laser cutting systems.
- Proficiency with CAD/CAM software such as Fusion 360, Mastercam, SolidWorks CAM, or similar.
- Experience building tooling and fixtures for prototype or low-volume manufacturing.
- Familiarity with electric motor or aerospace component manufacturing.
- Understanding of lean manufacturing and continuous improvement practices.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Exceptional attention to detail.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to maintain close tolerances and produce repeatable quality work.
- Effective communication and collaboration skills.
