Overview

To perform standard and complex electroencephalographic recordings; to monitor additional physiological phenomena by means of appropriate techniques; to perform visual evoked response and nerve conduction studies; to assist with coverage in the Neurology dept as needed. Work is performed in inpatient and outpatient settings.

Position Reports To: Practice Manager III


Responsibilities

  1. Greets patients and escorts them to exam room.

  2. Applies suitable electrodes on predetermined measured positions on the patient’s head and checks their performance.

  3. Calibrates and adjusts the EEG apparatus as needed.

  4. Abstracts relevant information from the patient’s clinical record and obtains additional information by questioning the patient.

  5. Selects predetermined electrode combinations as well as special combinations necessary for the case under study; obtains standard recordings, recognizes artifacts, and takes appropriate steps to eliminate them; describes all abnormal clinical manifestations observed during the test; uses activation procedures such as hyperventilation, photic stimulation and sleep; obtains the patient’s cooperation for the best performance of these tests; when indicated by the circumstances of the recording, monitors on the same apparatus other variables such as electromyograms, eletrocardiograms, electrooculograms, respirations, etc.

  6. Keeps equipment in a clean operating condition; detects instrument malfunctions and makes minor maintenance adjustments; reports the need for major repairs.

  7. Initiates patient diagnostic encounter in EPIC; forwards to interpreting physician for billing and closure.

  8. Performs visual evoked response and nerve conduction studies as required.

  9. Assists with coverage in Neurology Dept as required.

  10. Required to maintain active Basic Life Support (CPR) certification.

  11. Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Graduation from an AMA accredited training program for EEG and/or evoked potential techs or another EEG Pathway approved by ABRET.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Neurodiagnostic Credentialing and Accreditation (ABRET) Registration.

Desired:

  • Medical terminology.
  • Knowledge of human anatomy and physiology.
