The Controls Technician is responsible for the installation, wiring, troubleshooting, and commissioning of electrical control panels, machinery, and automation systems. This position combines hands-on electrical work with basic controls understanding and customer-facing responsibilities. The role requires 25–50% travel to customer sites for installation, startup support, and problem resolution.

Responsibilities:

Electrical Installation & Wiring

  • Install, wire, and terminate electrical control panels and machine wiring.
  • Read and interpret electrical schematics and wiring diagrams.
  • Install industrial wiring systems, including rigid metal conduit.

Troubleshooting & Commissioning

  • Use meters and test equipment to diagnose and repair electrical circuits and control systems.
  • Assist in power-up and commissioning of automation equipment and control panels.
  • Provide troubleshooting support for both Apex-built systems and interfaces to equipment provided by others.

Customer Site Work & Travel

  • Travel 25–50% to customer sites for installation, testing, commissioning, troubleshooting, and technical support.
  • Provide clear, professional communication with customers during onsite work.
  • Participate in customer training as needed (technical or non-technical).

Documentation & Standards

  • Review customer specifications to ensure compliance with electrical and safety requirements.
  • Follow internal, customer-specific, and national/international electrical standards, including NEC and safety practices.

Teamwork & Professional Conduct

  • Work effectively with electricians, engineers, and technicians in both shop and field environments.
  • Provide timely updates on project progress.
  • Act consistently with honesty, integrity, and strong customer service values.

Education, Experience & Skill Requirements

Required

  • Experience with electrical wiring, industrial equipment, or control panel assembly.
  • Ability to read electrical schematics.
  • Strong understanding of electrical safety practices, including lockout/tagout and arc flash.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and strong dependability.
  • Willingness and ability to travel 25–50% for field work.

Preferred

  • Licensed journeyman electrician or 4th-year electrical apprentice.
  • Experience installing and troubleshooting industrial machinery wiring.
  • Exposure to PLCs, HMIs, motion systems, robotics, or industrial networking.
  • Ability to work with Microsoft Word and Excel.

Physical Requirements

  • Lift 50 lbs. frequently and up to 100 lbs. with assistance.
  • Climbing, bending, stooping, twisting, squatting, and extended walking.
  • Occasional exposure to weather during field work.
  • Operation of motor vehicles, forklifts, and power tools as needed.
