Residential HVAC Service Tech
Job Description
Job Description
We are seeking an experienced, well-rounded HVAC Service Technician to join our team. In this role, you will independently diagnose, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain residential and light-commercial HVAC equipment. We are looking for a skilled professional we can confidently put in a truck and send to customers without requiring significant day-to-day supervision.
We are not looking for a salesperson who happens to know HVAC. We want a strong HVAC technician who is also comfortable communicating recommendations and helping customers make informed decisions.
Key Responsibilities- Technical Service: Diagnose both electrical and mechanical problems, identifying the root cause of issues rather than simply replacing parts. Complete repairs professionally and efficiently.
- Maintenance: Perform comprehensive preventive maintenance and system inspections.
- Customer Service: Explain HVAC problems to homeowners in understandable terms, discuss repair options/pricing, and build trust with customers.
- Consultative Recommendations: Make appropriate repair and system-replacement recommendations while identifying additional legitimate service opportunities.
Required Skills & Experience
The ideal candidate will have strong diagnostic and troubleshooting experience in:- Residential and light-commercial HVAC service
- Air conditioning systems and gas furnaces
- Heat pumps and mini-split/ductless systems

- Refrigeration diagnostics, airflow, and ductwork-related issues
Position Requirements- Certifications: Valid EPA Certification.
- Education: High School Diploma or GED.
- License: Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
- Physical Ability: Ability to climb ladders, work in attics/crawlspaces/confined areas, and lift at least 50 lbs.
- Tools: Ability to use standard HVAC diagnostic equipment, hand tools, and power tools.
- Soft Skills: Strong independent troubleshooting ability, paired with excellent customer service and communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications- Several years of true service and diagnostic experience (rather than a primary background in installation).
- Strong, hands-on experience with boilers and oil equipment to comfortably service a broad range of unique systems.
Benefits & Perks- Commission opportunities on repairs and new-system sales
- Paid holidays and paid personal days
- IRA contribution match up to 3%
- Healthcare benefits
What Matters Most
When screening candidates, the biggest things I would like you to determine are:
1.
Can this person independently diagnose HVAC problems?
2.
Are they a service technician first, rather than primarily an installer?
3.
How strong are they electrically?
4.
What equipment are they comfortable servicing?
5.
Can they work on boilers and oil equipment?
6.
Are they comfortable with heat pumps and mini-splits?
7.
Can they professionally communicate repair/replacement recommendations to customers?
8.
Can we confidently put them in a company truck and send them to a customer on their own?
9.
Why are they considering leaving their current employer?
10.
What compensation would it take for them to make a move?
