Job Title: Automation Maintenance Technician

Job Description

This role focuses on maintaining and optimizing automated warehouse equipment, ensuring high reliability and minimal downtime. You will perform corrective, preventive, predictive, and condition-based maintenance on a variety of electro-mechanical systems, troubleshoot complex automation and controls issues, and use structured problem-solving methodologies to eliminate recurring failures. The position requires hands-on work with conveyors, servo motors, pneumatics, PLCs, and industrial control systems, as well as thorough documentation of all maintenance activities in a Computerized Maintenance Management System.

Responsibilities

  • Perform corrective, preventive, predictive, and condition-based maintenance on automated warehouse equipment to ensure safe, reliable operation.
  • Troubleshoot electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and automation-related equipment failures to quickly restore functionality.
  • Modify equipment settings and operational parameters to optimize performance, throughput, and reliability.
  • Diagnose automation and controls issues using PLC diagnostics, HMIs, industrial networking tools, electrical schematics, and manufacturer documentation.
  • Conduct structured root cause analysis (RCA), PDCA, and other problem-solving methodologies to identify and eliminate recurring equipment failures.
  • Analyze equipment performance trends to improve reliability and reduce unplanned downtime.
  • Document maintenance activities, equipment history, root causes, and corrective actions in the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
  • Partner with equipment suppliers during troubleshooting, warranty support, and equipment improvement activities.
  • Perform electrical and mechanical maintenance on servo motors and associated control systems.
  • Maintain and repair conveyor systems, including drives, belts, sensors, and related components.
  • Service and troubleshoot variable frequency drives (VFDs) and related control equipment.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot pneumatic systems to ensure proper operation of automated equipment.
  • Work safely at elevated heights up to 40 meters (131 feet) as required by the facility and equipment layout.

Essential Skills

  • 5–7 years of experience as a maintenance technician in an automated or industrial environment.
  • Proven experience working on conveyor systems, including maintenance and repair.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills in both electrical and mechanical domains.
  • Hands-on experience with electro-mechanical and mechatronics systems.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and maintain servo motors and associated control equipment.
  • Practical knowledge of pneumatic systems, including maintenance and fault finding.
  • Demonstrated experience troubleshooting PLCs and automation control systems.
  • Ability to use PLC diagnostics, HMIs, industrial networking tools, and electrical schematics for problem resolution.
  • Experience with variable frequency drives (VFDs) maintenance and troubleshooting.
  • Capability to perform structured root cause analysis (RCA) and PDCA problem-solving.
  • Competence in documenting work accurately in a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
  • Comfort working at heights up to 40 meters (131 feet).

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience in electro-mechanical or mechatronics disciplines.
  • Experience partnering with equipment suppliers for troubleshooting, warranty support, and continuous improvement.
  • Familiarity with automation-related manufacturer documentation and technical manuals.
  • Ability to analyze equipment performance data and trends to drive reliability improvements.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining accurate maintenance records.
  • Effective communication skills for collaborating with cross-functional teams and external vendors.

Work Environment

This role is based in an automated warehouse environment with extensive conveyor systems, servo-driven equipment, pneumatic components, PLC-controlled machinery, HMIs, and VFDs. You will initially work on an administrative day shift until approximately March/April 2027 to become fully trained and integrated into the operation. After this period, you will move to a 12-hour shift schedule, with positions available on both day and night shifts (2 technicians on day shift and 2 technicians on night shift). The work involves hands-on maintenance activities in an industrial setting and requires comfort working at heights up to 40 meters (131 feet).

Job Type & Location

This is a Permanent position based out of South Chesterfield, VA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $76648.00 - $76648.00/yr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
