This role focuses on welding large heavy plate projects in a job shop environment using flux core and other welding processes. You will work on a variety of customer jobs, performing high-quality welds on thick plate materials and demonstrating strong proficiency with weld symbols and flux core wire.

Responsibilities
  • Perform flux core welding on large plate jobs using 3/32" wire, ensuring strong, consistent weld quality.
  • Weld on plate materials of at least 1/4 inch thickness and heavier, following job specifications and weld symbols.
  • Interpret and apply weld symbols correctly; follow established welding procedures and parameters.
  • Complete required welding tests, including T-Bar and 2G (horizontal) position tests, producing 1/2" welds on one side and 5/8" welds on the other as specified.
  • After contract start, successfully complete bevel tests for x-ray inspection, meeting quality and safety standards.
  • Operate and adjust welding equipment for flux core, sub arc, metal core, MIG, and stick processes as needed for various jobs.
  • Maintain a clean, organized work area and follow all safety guidelines in an open shop environment.
  • Collaborate with team members and supervisors to meet production goals and deliver jobs on time.
  • Inspect welds visually and with appropriate tools to verify quality and adherence to specifications.
  • Adapt to different customer projects typical of a job shop, working on diverse parts and configurations.
Essential Skills
  • At least 2 years of experience performing flux core welds with 3/32" wire.
  • Proven experience welding large plate jobs in a fabrication or job shop environment.
  • Experience welding on plate materials of at least 1/4 inch thickness.
  • Strong proficiency working with 3/32" flux core wire for a minimum of 2 years.
  • Ability to read and understand weld symbols (blueprint reading experience not required).
  • Capability to pass a T-Bar welding test and a 2G (horizontal) position welding test.
  • Ability to complete bevel weld tests suitable for x-ray inspection.
  • Hands-on experience with heavy plate welding and related equipment.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience in large fabrication or job shop environments similar to heavy equipment or structural steel manufacturing.
  • Capability to perform Sub Arc welding with 5/32"–3/16" wire in both automatic and hand-held setups.
  • Experience with flux core welding using 3/32" wire in production settings.
  • Familiarity with metal core welding using .045"–1/16" wire.
  • Experience with MIG welding using .045" wire and similar configurations.
  • Ability to perform stick welding with 1/8"–5/16" electrodes.
  • Comfort working on a variety of customer projects requiring different welding processes and techniques.

Work Environment

You work in a clean, open job shop environment focused on heavy plate fabrication. The role operates on 1st and 2nd shifts: 1st shift runs 5:00 a.m.–3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday with an additional 5-hour shift on Saturday, and 2nd shift runs 3:30 p.m.–1:30 a.m. Monday through Friday with an additional 5-hour shift on Saturday. You use a range of welding technologies and equipment, including sub arc (automatic and hand-held), flux core, metal core, MIG, and stick welding systems. The workspace emphasizes cleanliness, organization, and safety, supporting efficient movement and clear visibility across the shop.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Oak Creek, WI.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $26.00 - $33.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
