Job Description
The Painter applies high-quality industrial coatings to trailers and equipment using spray guns, paint brushes, and automated mixing systems. This role selects and mixes paints, operates mechanized painting and coating equipment, and performs touch-up work on small items. The Painter also uses related tools and material-handling equipment, follows detailed job specifications and blueprints, and supports continuous improvement and safety initiatives while maintaining a clean and orderly work area.
Responsibilities
- Select appropriate paint types and colors based on job order specifications and product requirements.
- Mix paints using automated paint mixing equipment to achieve correct color, viscosity, and coverage.
- Operate hand-held spray guns and other mechanized painting or product coating equipment in an industrial setting.
- Paint small items and perform touch-ups using paint brushes to ensure a consistent and high-quality finish.
- Operate and use related equipment and tools, including forklifts, hoists, slings, portable and bench grinders, hand tools, and tape measures.
- Complete preventive maintenance on painting and related equipment by following manufacturers’ instructions and facility procedures.
- Troubleshoot equipment malfunctions, call for repairs when necessary, and accurately complete daily equipment check sheets.
- Read, understand, and follow job order specifications, blueprints, work instructions, and established procedures.
- Maintain work performance in alignment with established quality, productivity, and safety standards and job order specifications.
- Participate in process and product development initiatives, including improvement programs, cross-functional teams, and safety committees.
- Perform or assist with other assigned duties as qualified to support production and team objectives.
- Maintain a safe and clean working environment by complying with all safety procedures, rules, and regulations.
- Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times, including hearing protection, safety glasses, safety boots with metatarsal guards, and face shields as required.
- Support inspection activities by visually checking painted surfaces and finishes against quality standards and blueprints.
- Work collaboratively with other team members, including welders, fabricators, and production staff, to meet schedule and quality targets.
Essential Skills
- At least 1 year of industrial painting experience in a production or fabrication environment.
- Hands-on experience with spray painting, including operating spray guns for industrial applications.
- Ability to operate and control mechanized painting and product coating equipment safely and effectively.
- Experience using paint brushes for detail work and touch-ups on small items and components.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, job order specifications, and work instructions.
- Proficiency with basic hand tools, tape measures, and material-handling equipment such as hoists and slings.
- Ability to perform basic troubleshooting and preventive maintenance on painting equipment.
- Understanding of industrial safety practices and consistent adherence to PPE requirements, including hearing protection, safety glasses, safety boots with metatarsal guards, and face shields.
- Capability to work in a fabrication shop environment with industrial painting booths, blasting and sandblasting operations, and grinding activities.
- Strong attention to detail to ensure consistent coverage, proper surface preparation, and high-quality finishes.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- 1+ years of spray painting experience in an industrial or manufacturing setting.
- 1+ years of grinding experience
- Experience with industrial paint booths and related ventilation and curing systems.
- Familiarity with blasting and sandblasting processes for surface preparation.
- Experience with inspection of painted surfaces and finishes against blueprint and specification requirements.
- Comfort working with forklifts and other material-handling equipment (with appropriate internal authorization or certifications where required).
- Ability to contribute ideas to process and product improvement initiatives and safety committees.
- Strong teamwork and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively in a busy fabrication shop.
- Reliability and a strong work ethic, with pride in workmanship and consistency in meeting quality and productivity expectations.

Work Environment
The role is based in a fabrication shop environment where trailers and equipment are built and finished. The atmosphere is laid back and team-oriented, with music played in the shop and employees working together to complete chassis and finishing tasks. Welders work in pairs, and the broader production team includes more than one hundred employees, creating a busy, collaborative setting. Work involves industrial painting in paint booths, as well as exposure to grinding, blasting, and sandblasting operations, requiring consistent use of PPE such as hearing protection, safety glasses, safety boots with metatarsal guards, and face shields when appropriate. The environment includes mechanized painting equipment, spray guns, automated paint mixing systems, forklifts, hoists, slings, grinders, and standard hand tools. Employees are expected to maintain a safe and clean workspace, follow established safety procedures and regulations, and be comfortable working around heavy fabrication and coating equipment in a production-oriented setting.
Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract to Hire position based out of Bridgman, MI.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $20.00 - $20.00/hr.
Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
