Job Description
The Utility Equipment Operator runs the yard by safely operating heavy equipment, handling lumber and bulk materials, and supporting daily yard operations. This role combines wheel-loader, forklift, and industrial saw operation with general labor tasks, order pulling, and truck loading and unloading to ensure efficient, safe, and accurate movement of materials throughout the facility.
Responsibilities
- Operate wheel loaders safely to move, load, and organize bulk materials throughout the yard.
- Handle forklifts to load and unload trucks, transport materials, and maneuver safely in tight yard spaces.
- Operate industrial saws to cut lumber and wood products to precise specifications.
- Perform general yard labor including cleanup, material staging, and support of daily yard operations.
- Read and interpret work orders, select correct materials, and prepare loads for shipment or production.
- Build wood boards, dunnage, and supports used for steel handling and transport.
- Work with truck drivers to load and unload materials, secure loads, and ensure accurate inbound and outbound documentation.
- Use a tape measure to accurately measure materials to meet production and customer requirements.
- Operate hand and power tools such as drills, saws, grinders, and nail guns safely and efficiently.
- Perform all duties outdoors in varying weather conditions while maintaining productivity and safety standards.
- Collaborate closely with yard crew, drivers, and supervisors to keep operations running smoothly.
- Cross-train on different equipment and tasks to support flexible yard operations as needed.
Essential Skills
- Proven ability to safely operate a wheel loader in a busy yard or earthworks environment.
- Experience with heavy equipment operation in industrial or construction settings.
- Competence in forklift operation for loading, unloading, and transporting materials in tight spaces.
- Ability to operate industrial saws for cutting lumber and wood products to exact specifications.
- Strong tape-measure reading skills and ability to perform accurate measurements.
- Experience using hand and power tools, including drills, saws, grinders, and nail guns, in a safe and controlled manner.
- Capability to perform physically demanding yard labor tasks in outdoor conditions.
- Attention to detail when reading work orders and preparing materials for shipment or production.
- Commitment to safety in a loud, dirty, and high-activity industrial environment.
- Ability to work collaboratively as part of a yard crew and communicate effectively with drivers and supervisors.

Work Environment
The work environment is very loud, dirty, and subject to cold and hot temperatures, requiring comfort working in the elements and around heavy industrial activity. Work takes place primarily outdoors and in yard areas with frequent use of wheel loaders, forklifts, industrial saws, and various hand and power tools. Team members are expected to cross-train on different equipment and tasks to support flexible operations. The schedule runs within a hybrid window from approximately 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., with work typically 5 days per week for 8–12 hours per day. Start times can flex between 6:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m., and end times between 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m., depending on operational needs.
Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract to Hire position based out of Camp Hill, PA.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $23.00 - $25.00/hr.
Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
