Job Description

The Tank Filler safely unloads magnesium and lime from tanker trucks, oversees the injection process at steel mills, and ensures materials are properly stored and consistently available on site. This role combines hands-on mechanical work with careful monitoring, data tracking, and communication to maintain smooth and efficient operations in a heavy industrial environment.

Responsibilities

  • Unload magnesium and lime from trucks and ensure safe and efficient off-loading procedures.
  • Connect hoses to tanker trucks and verify that all hose lines are free of leaks, kinks, or other issues.
  • Monitor truck meters and motor gauges to track product flow and equipment performance.
  • Ensure product is properly transferred into storage silos and verify correct material levels on site.
  • Watch and oversee the injection process at steel mills to confirm proper operation and material usage.
  • Track process and performance data, both manually and on the computer, to identify and prevent issues.
  • Monitor overall system performance and respond quickly to any irregularities or alarms.
  • Maintain required material inventory levels at all times and coordinate adjustments as needed.
  • Perform regular cleanup of the work area to maintain a safe and organized environment.
  • Think quickly and troubleshoot issues as they arise, applying mechanical aptitude to resolve minor problems.
  • Communicate promptly and clearly with supervisors and mill contacts when issues occur or support is needed.
  • Follow all training, procedures, and safety guidelines with strong attention to detail.
  • Lift, pull, bend, and perform other physical tasks throughout the day to support operations.
  • Document operational data accurately using both written forms and computer-based systems.
  • Use hand and power tools to kink off hoses and stop liquid flow if problems occur.
  • Add new hoses or perform minor hose and equipment repairs as needed to maintain continuous operation.
  • Provide coverage across first and second shifts as required, ensuring reliable support when team members are unavailable.

Essential Skills

  • Previous tank loading experience or strong mechanical inclination.
  • Demonstrated reliability and consistent attendance.
  • Self-starter mindset with the ability to work proactively and independently.
  • Strong attention to detail and strict adherence to training and procedures.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors and mill personnel.
  • Comfort working with hand tools and power tools in an industrial setting.
  • Ability to perform computer data entry and documentation review accurately.
  • Capability to lift, pull, bend, and perform physical tasks throughout the workday.
  • Mechanical inclination to troubleshoot minor equipment and hose issues.
  • Experience with loader operations, bulk shipping, or heavy equipment operation is strongly preferred.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience working in steel mills or heavy industrial environments.
  • Interest in learning and being trained for specialized industrial and tank loading work.
  • Familiarity with documentation review and process tracking.
  • Experience in bulk shipping operations or similar material handling roles.
  • Comfort working with large industrial equipment and machinery.
  • Ability to adapt to changing shift needs and provide flexible coverage.

Work Environment

This role is based on site in a heavy industrial steel environment, working around large equipment and active mill operations. You primarily work first shift, 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, with flexibility to cover second shift from 3:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. when needed. The setting is physically demanding and requires regular lifting, pulling, bending, and hands-on work with hoses, tanks, and heavy equipment. You use hand tools and power tools to manage hose lines and support the flow of materials. Appropriate safety footwear, such as steel-toe boots, is required, and you must complete all necessary compliance clearances before starting. The environment emphasizes safety, adherence to procedures, and teamwork in a busy industrial facility.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of East Chicago, IN.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $21.00 - $35.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
