Job Description
The Mechanical Assembler will fabricate and assemble custom copper piping racks and related housings using oxyacetylene brazing, hand tools, and measurement equipment. This role focuses on cutting copper piping to precise lengths, brazing copper-to-copper joints according to customer specifications, and working from blueprints and schematics in a fast-paced, team-based manufacturing environment.
Responsibilities
- Cut copper piping and insulation to exact lengths using a tape measure and hand tools based on customer specifications and blueprints.
- Braise copper-to-copper piping using an oxyacetylene torch throughout the day, ensuring strong, clean, and accurate joints.
- Interpret and follow blueprints, schematics, and assembly instructions to build custom units and related housings.
- Assemble mechanical racks and the housings they sit in as part of a team, ensuring all components are properly aligned and secured.
- Move, bend, kneel, twist, and stand for extended periods while performing assembly and brazing tasks on the production floor.
- Use basic hand tools and mechanical assembly techniques to complete fabrication and general labor tasks as required.
- Collaborate with team members in groups of 3–4 to meet production goals and maintain a fast-paced workflow.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area and follow all safety procedures, including proper use of tools and personal protective equipment.
- Support additional fabrication tasks, such as MIG welding on mild steel, when skills and production needs align.
- Perform quality-conscious work, checking measurements, fit, and brazed joints to ensure units meet required standards.
Essential Skills
- At least 3 months of experience in mechanical assembly, complex machine operation, construction, or similar work that demonstrates mechanical aptitude.
- Ability to accurately read and use a tape measure to cut piping and insulation to specified lengths.
- Basic mechanical skills and comfort using hand tools in an assembly or fabrication environment.
- Ability to read and work from blueprints and schematics as needed.
- Physical ability to perform frequent bending, kneeling, twisting, moving, and standing throughout the shift.
- Interest in and ability to perform oxyacetylene brazing on copper piping with training provided.
- Team-oriented mindset with the ability to work effectively in small groups in a fast-paced setting.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience with brazing, MIG welding, or other fabrication processes is a plus.
- Experience in plumbing, entry-level welding, farm machinery repair, or automotive repair is highly beneficial.
- Familiarity with mechanical assembly in a manufacturing or construction environment.
- Comfort with general labor tasks in a production setting.
- Willingness to cross-train in areas such as quality checks and functional testing.
Why Work Here?
Employees benefit from a clean, well-organized custom shop where every project is unique and impactful, offering variety and continual learning. There are opportunities to train into additional areas such as brazing, quality, and functional testing, supporting ongoing skill development and career growth. Performance-based pay increases recognize strong contributions, and the operation is known for steady work and job security, even during economic downturns.
Work Environment
The role is based in a large, fast-paced manufacturing building where units are built in teams of 3–4 people. The environment is well lit and kept clean, though the nature of the work means employees can expect to get dirty. The standard schedule runs Monday through Thursday from 5:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. There is no air conditioning, but fans are used to maintain airflow. Steel-toed shoes and long pants are required every day as part of the dress code, and employees work with mechanical assembly tools, oxyacetylene brazing equipment, and occasionally welding equipment.
