Chapman University is currently searching for an Environmental Health& Safety (EH&S) Specialist to cover a temporary leave of absence within the team. The duties will include:

  • Assist the Vice President for Enterprise Risk and Safety with all applicable EH&S programs to ensure compliance with EH&S regulations and industry standards. EH&S programs include Laboratory and Chemical Safety, Radiation Safety, Occupational Safety, Injury and Illness Prevention, Environmental Health, Industrial Hygiene, Ergonomics, Hazardous Materials, Biological Safety, and Hazardous Waste. Additionally, assists with the development of these programs and other EH&S programs that encompass these areas.
  • Provides technical assistance, services, and consultation to ensure the health and safety of staff and students and regulatory compliance with EH&S programs.
  • Coordinates closely with program managers, staff, and University units to ensure effective and compliant EH&S programs are in place.
  • Oversees and conducts root cause investigation/accident response efforts for incidents involving program areas of responsibility. Make recommendations as appropriate to reduce/eliminate injuries and illnesses. Maintains and tracks trends using an internal system of documentation.
  • Assists with identifying, evaluating, and controlling workplace hazards, which includes comprehensive safety audits and reporting of findings, of various environments ranging from office settings to research labs.
  • Responds to campus emergencies involving potentially hazardous materials.
  • Assists with laboratory safety programs in accordance with other applicable programs. Serves as Laser Safety Officer on campus to provide support, expertise, and technical knowledge on laser safety. Program administrator for various other programs: AED, Ergonomics, Respiratory Protection, Radiation Safety, and Theatre and Entertainment Safety related programs.


Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree specific to the area of expertise, or related field, such as environmental science, industrial hygiene, radiation safety/health physicist, biology, physics, chemistry, or engineering.
  • Minimum of 5-years experience in developing, implementing, managing, and supporting various Environmental Health and Safety programs
  • Knowledge of current environmental health and occupational safety principles as applied to academic teaching and research safety programs and the ability to direct the safe implementation of research practices
  • Knowledge of and demonstrated effective experience working within applicable federal, state and local safety laws and regulations, including awareness of current issues that may impact functional responsibilities
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with experience in gathering and collecting data, reasoning logically, drawing valid conclusions, and making effective recommendations to management
