Position Summary
The Dispatch Manager, Legal Division is responsible for planning, scheduling, and monitoring the movement of legal (standard weight and dimension) flatbed and stepdeck freight from origin to delivery. This role serves as the primary point of contact between drivers, customers, and brokers, ensuring every load moves safely, efficiently, and on schedule. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, thrives under pressure, and has strong working knowledge of DOT/FMCSA regulations and general flatbed/stepdeck dispatch operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan, schedule, and dispatch drivers for legal flatbed and stepdeck loads, matching equipment and drivers to load requirements and delivery windows.
- Communicate proactively with drivers throughout each trip to confirm pickups, deliveries, and route compliance, and to resolve issues in real time.
- Monitor driver Hours of Service (HOS) using ELD/TMS systems to ensure compliance with FMCSA regulations.
- Track shipments in real time and proactively manage delays caused by weather, traffic, breakdowns, or scheduling changes.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for customers and brokers regarding load status, ETAs, and delivery confirmations.
- Maintain accurate, up-to-date records in the TMS, including load details, mileage, bills of lading (BOLs), and proof of delivery (POD).
- Optimize routing for cost efficiency and on-time delivery performance.
- Respond quickly and effectively to emergencies, breakdowns, accidents, or service failures, coordinating roadside assistance or rerouting as needed.
- Build and maintain relationships with carriers, brokers, shippers, and receivers to secure capacity and freight.
- Collaborate with the safety and compliance team to ensure driver and equipment readiness for each load.
- Assist with load-related billing and paperwork to ensure accuracy and timely invoicing.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate degree in logistics, transportation, or related field preferred.
- 1-3+ years of dispatch experience in flatbed and/or stepdeck trucking or freight logistics preferred.
- Working knowledge of DOT/FMCSA regulations and general flatbed/stepdeck dispatch operations, including load securement (tarping, chains, straps) and dimension awareness.
- Experience with transportation management systems (TMS) and ELD platforms (e.g., McLeod, TMW, Samsara, Motive, or similar).
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to manage multiple drivers and loads simultaneously.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to stay calm and make sound decisions under pressure.
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment with shifting priorities and occasional after-hours demands.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook) and general computer literacy.
- Valid driver's license required.
Preferred Skills
- Prior experience with load boards and freight-matching platforms (e.g., DAT, Truckstop).
- Familiarity with flatbed/stepdeck equipment, load securement standards, and general freight handling.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus.
Work Environment & Physical Demands
This position is primarily office-based within a dispatch center environment, requiring extended periods at a computer and phone workstation. The role may require flexibility to respond to urgent load issues outside of standard business hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays. Occasional visits to the yard or terminal may be required.
