Receiving Associate
Job Description
Overview
We're looking for a detail-oriented Receiving Associate to join our machine shop team. Every day, a wide range of items comes through our doors: raw material bars, machined parts, small hardware like nuts and bolts, tooling, consumables, and everyday Amazon/vendor packages. This role is responsible for making sure every item is accurately logged, inspected, and routed to the right place, so production never gets held up by missing or misplaced materials. This is a hands-on role suited for someone who is organized, physically capable, and takes ownership of accuracy.
This is a foundational hire — the first dedicated position in what will become our Receiving department. As we continue to scale, you'll have the opportunity to help shape processes from the ground up and grow into a lead or supervisory role as the department expands.
Primary Responsibilities
- Receive, unload, and inspect all incoming shipments, from heavy bar stock and pallets to small parcels and hardware boxes
- Verify shipment contents against packing slips, purchase orders, and vendor documentation; flag discrepancies, damage, or shortages immediately
- Accurately log all received materials into inventory/ERP systems, including quantities, part numbers, lot numbers, and material certifications where applicable
- Sort, label, and route received items to correct storage locations, staging areas, or departments (production floor, tool crib, office, etc.)
- Safely operate material handling equipment (forklift, pallet jack, hand truck) to move heavy or bulky items such as bar stock
- Maintain organized, clean, and safe receiving/staging areas
- Communicate with purchasing, production, and shop floor teams regarding incoming materials, expected shipments, and any delays or issues
- Handle and track small consumables and hardware (nuts, bolts, fasteners, etc.) with the same accuracy as large material orders
- Assist shipping team with packaging
- Assist welder (our boss) with lifting and moving heavy items
Nice-to-haves
- Prior experience in a machine shop, manufacturing, or industrial warehouse environment
- Familiarity with reading packing slips, POs, and material certs (mill certs, etc.)
- Forklift certification (or willingness to obtain one)
- Experience with inventory/ERP software (e.g., NetSuite, Epicor, JobBOSS, Fishbowl)
- Ability to use Microsoft Excel, Word, and other software
- Basic understanding of metals/materials used in machining (steel, aluminum, etc.)
- Strong organizational habits and a "measure twice" mindset toward accuracy
