Position Summary
Kinkaid Civil Construction is seeking an experienced Controller to lead the company’s accounting and financial operations. The Controller will be responsible for accurate financial reporting, strong internal controls, construction accounting, job costing, budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis.
This position will work closely with executive leadership, project management, estimating, operations, and the accounting team to provide timely financial information, strengthen financial controls, manage risk, and support profitable company growth.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Management & Reporting
- Oversee the company’s accounting operations, including accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll, general ledger, and job cost accounting.
- Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP.
- Maintain an effective chart of accounts appropriate for heavy civil construction operations.
- Provide management with timely financial information and recommendations to improve profitability and financial performance.
Construction Accounting & Job Costing
- Oversee and continuously improve construction job costing systems and processes.
- Ensure accurate and timely reporting of project costs, revenues, margins, and financial performance.
- Establish and monitor cost-to-complete and project forecasting processes.
- Review progress billings, pay applications, change orders, retainage, and related project accounting.
- Oversee subcontractor financial compliance, including billings, lien waivers, and certificates of insurance.
- Monitor equipment, fleet, fuel, rental, and other equipment-related costs to ensure accurate project and company reporting.
- Partner with project managers and operations to identify cost issues early and implement corrective actions.
Budgeting, Forecasting & Cash Management
- Lead and manage the annual budgeting process.
- Support long-range financial planning and modeling.
- Support bonding capacity analysis, contractor prequalification, and financial packages required for public and private bids.
Internal Controls, Compliance & Risk Management
- Establish, maintain, and improve internal accounting controls to safeguard company assets and ensure financial accuracy.
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, tax requirements, and applicable construction industry requirements.
- Coordinate annual financial audits and work effectively with external CPA firms and tax professionals.
- Evaluate accounting processes and implement improvements that increase efficiency, accuracy, and accountability.
Leadership & Business Partnership
- Lead, mentor, and develop the accounting team.
- Provide project managers and operational leaders with clear financial information and cost-control guidance.
- Promote financial accountability and understanding throughout the organization.
- Collaborate with executive leadership, estimating, operations, and project management on financial and strategic decisions.
- Maintain strong relationships with banks, bonding companies, insurance providers, CPAs, and other financial partners.
Requirements
Qualifications
Required
- Proven experience as a Controller, Assistant Controller, Accounting Manager, or in a similar senior accounting role.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, accounting operations, internal controls, budgeting, forecasting, and cash management.
- Demonstrated experience with construction job costing and project-based accounting.
- Ability to analyze financial information and communicate financial results effectively to executive and operational leadership.
- Experience leading, managing, or developing accounting personnel.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills with a high degree of accuracy and integrity.
- Proficiency with accounting software and Microsoft Excel.
Preferred
- Controller or senior accounting experience in heavy civil construction, underground utilities, earthwork, or another equipment-intensive construction environment.
- Strong knowledge of construction billing, retainage, change orders, job costing, and cost-to-complete reporting.
- Experience with construction bonding, contractor prequalification, and surety financial reporting.
- Experience accounting for heavy equipment, fleet, fuel, and related operating costs.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
- CPA or other relevant professional certification.
