External Affairs Representative
Job Description
We are seeking a dynamic, motivated and community-focused External Affairs Representative to provide temporary support to a fast-paced Government Affairs & Community Relations team in Oakland. The role will include attending community events, responding to public and stakeholder inquiries, supporting time-sensitive departmental initiatives, conducting research and preparing reports and materials for organizational leadership and external stakeholders. This is a 3-6 month contract role and it’s 100% onsite in Oakland. The pay is $55.00 per hour.
Note: Evening and weekend availability is required.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Establish and maintain ongoing relationships and dialogue with community organizations, public agencies, elected officials, constituent groups and other key stakeholders.
- Respond effectively to constituent and community concerns while professionally advocating for the organization’s interests.
- Serve as a key liaison between community-based constituencies and internal staff regarding operational and service-related issues.
- Communicate and coordinate with public agencies, community organizations, and internal departments to resolve concerns and identify potential service improvements or changes.
- Promote the client’s policies with city, county and regional planning agencies and support collaborative efforts designed to increase public engagement.
- Identify, monitor, and track relevant state and regional and legislative issues.
- Conduct research regarding community, transportation, legislative, and public policy issues.
- Prepare reports, presentations, correspondence, and other materials for executive leadership, governing bodies, community organizations and external stakeholders.
- Attend and represent the organization at community meetings, public events, stakeholder meetings and other outreach activities.
- Respond to customer and community questions in a professional, knowledgeable and service-oriented manner.
- Provide support for time-sensitive projects and departmental priorities as needed.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Public Administration, Public Relations, Community Planning, or a directly related field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant training.
- Minimum of four years of verifiable professional experience working with local government agencies, public officials, community-based organizations, constituent groups and/or special interest groups.
- Demonstrated experience building and maintaining relationships with external stakeholders and community partners.
- Experience working in a public-facing, government affairs, community relations, public affairs, or similar environment is strongly preferred.
- Experience using Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, at an intermediate level or higher.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- May be tasked with lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling up to 25 lbs., if able to do so.
- Must be able to sit for prolonged periods of time and walk/stand for moderate periods of time.
- Must be able to bend at the knees and waist frequently
- Must be able to repetitively use a telephone and a computer mouse and keyboard.
