Accounting Controller
Job Description
Position Overview
The Controller will be responsible for the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of Watch Hill's financial reporting while providing financial insight into the performance of our projects and operations.
This is a highly visible, hands-on position requiring a strong understanding of construction and project-based accounting, job costing, work-in-progress reporting, cash flow, budgeting, and financial controls.
The successful candidate will be equally comfortable reviewing financial statements with senior management, working through project costs with operations and project managers, and improving the day-to-day accounting processes needed to support a growing organization.
Responsibilities
· Lead the company's day-to-day accounting and financial reporting functions.
· Manage monthly, quarterly, and year-end closing processes and ensure timely and accurate financial statements.
· Maintain strong project accounting disciplines, including job costing, WIP reporting, revenue recognition, project margins, committed costs, and cost-to-complete analysis.
· Partner with project managers and operational leadership to identify cost variances, margin issues, billing concerns, and financial risks before they impact project results.
· Develop and maintain reliable project and company-level financial forecasts.
· Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, customer billing, collections, payroll accounting, general ledger activity, and account reconciliations.
· Monitor cash flow and working capital and provide management with timely cash forecasting.
· Lead the annual budgeting process and provide monthly budget-to-actual and variance reporting.
· Develop meaningful financial and operational KPIs for executive management.
· Establish and maintain appropriate accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls.
· Improve accounting processes, reporting systems, and workflows as the company continues to grow.
· Ensure consistent financial controls and reporting across the company's multi-state operations.
· Coordinate with outside accountants, auditors, tax professionals, banks, insurance providers, and other financial partners.
· Support annual audits, tax filings, insurance audits, and other financial or regulatory requirements.
· Manage, mentor, and develop accounting staff while establishing clear standards for accuracy, accountability, and timeliness.
· Work closely with executive leadership on strategic initiatives, financial planning, and business performance.
Qualifications
· Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required.
· Minimum of 7 years of progressive accounting experience, preferably including Controller, Assistant Controller, or similar financial leadership responsibility.
· Construction, telecommunications construction, engineering, or other project-based accounting experience strongly preferred.
· Strong working knowledge of job costing, WIP schedules, revenue recognition, project profitability, and percentage-of-completion/project-based accounting (Foundation).
· Experience managing monthly and year-end close processes and preparing GAAP-based financial statements.
· Strong understanding of accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, cash management, budgeting, forecasting, and internal controls.
· Experience working with construction or project-based ERP/accounting systems strongly preferred.
· Advanced Microsoft Excel and financial analysis skills.
· Multi-state accounting experience is a plus.
· CPA or CMA is preferred but not required.
· Proven ability to improve processes and financial reporting in a growing organization.
· Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
· Ability to communicate clearly with executives, project managers, operations personnel, accountants, and outside financial partners.
· Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment with multiple projects, deadlines, and changing priorities.
· Hands-on leadership style with a willingness to get into the details when necessary.
The right Controller will understand how a project-based construction business makes money and will help our management team understand where we are making money, where margins are changing, where cash is tied up, and where action is needed.
This person should be proactive, analytical, organized, and comfortable challenging the numbers when something doesn't look right. Just as importantly, the Controller must be able to build strong working relationships with our operations and project management teams.
