About the Opportunity
We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Data Center Optical Engineer to support optical transport and fiber infrastructure within customer data centers and colocation facilities.
This role combines hands-on fiber expertise, field leadership, customer interaction, quality auditing, and technical troubleshooting. The ideal candidate will be comfortable leading teams, working directly with customers, and traveling to non-home-market locations on short notice to support new deployments and other critical projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and support fiber installation, migration, remediation, decommissioning, break/fix, and remote-hands activities.
- Conduct daily quality audits of work performed by third-party technicians and provide immediate feedback.
- Serve as a customer-facing technical representative, providing clear updates, reports, and issue resolution.
- Lead new business deployments and project kickoffs at customer locations.
- Perform and/or supervise optical testing and troubleshooting using:
- Optical power meters
- Stabilized light sources
- VFLs
- OTDRs
- Optical test sets
- Interpret and execute Methods of Procedure (MoPs), engineering documentation, vendor documentation, network diagrams, and cut sheets.
- Ensure accurate fiber connections, port assignments, labeling, and cable management.
- Maintain high standards for safety, quality, documentation, and operational execution.
- Travel to customer sites throughout the U.S., potentially for several weeks at a time and up to 100% of the time.
Required Qualifications
- 2.5+ years of fiber installation experience
- 1.5+ years of experience working in a large data center environment
- Proven team-lead experience
- Direct, face-to-face customer-facing experience
- Strong hands-on experience with connectorized fiber-optic cabling, including:
- Single-mode and multimode fiber
- LC connectors
- Fan-outs
- Structured cabling
- Demonstrated experience with optical testing and transport troubleshooting.
- Strong written and verbal English communication skills.
- Proficiency with Windows and Microsoft Office applications.
- Excellent organizational, documentation, and administrative skills.
- High integrity, self-motivation, and strong attention to detail.
- Ability to multitask and remain composed in fast-paced, high-availability environments.
- Willingness and ability to travel extensively, including short-notice travel, to kick off and lead new business.
- Commitment to safety, quality standards, and operational best practices.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift and move equipment weighing up to 50 lbs.
- Comfortable working at heights and in varying environmental conditions.
- Ability to work in active data center and colocation environments.
