General Laborer
Job Description
This role focuses on supporting the production of large precast concrete forms used in structures such as parking garages, grocery stores, and apartment buildings. You will help build and prepare steel and wooden molds based on blueprints, assist with concrete placement and finishing, and perform general labor tasks that keep the plant operating efficiently. Once the concrete forms are manufactured and shipped to construction sites, the production work is complete on-site.
Responsibilities- Build and assemble steel and wooden frames (molds) for precast concrete based on blueprints and piece drawings.
- Use hand tools and power tools to assist carpenters in constructing wooden frames and installing steel components within the forms prior to concrete pouring.
- Handle and move materials such as mesh sheets (including two-person lifts of up to 100 pounds), rebar, wires, nuts, and bolts to designated stations for form building.
- Prepare molds and beds for concrete placement by cleaning, scraping, and setting up side forms, chamfers, and bottom steel or plates according to specifications.
- Set up equipment used for casting bands and finishes to meet required design and quality standards.
- Lay out beds with proper dimensions for each piece drawing and for the overall bed length, ensuring accurate measurements and alignment.
- Monitor bed heat using computer systems to support proper curing conditions and product quality.
- Coordinate and assist with the pouring of concrete into molds within the plant, ensuring proper placement on the bed to match piece drawings.
- Smooth and finish concrete surfaces using brooms, levels, screeds, and laser screeds to achieve the required finish and tolerances.
- Wash exposed aggregate on panels and full beds to meet finishing specifications.
- Perform grinding tasks, including grinding ends of panels and cleaning pallets and beds to prepare for subsequent production.
- Scrape and clean side forms and chamfers, and apply oil to forms as needed to ensure proper release and surface quality.
- Ensure correct dunnage placement for finished products in the yard to support safe storage and transport.
- Carry out general labor duties such as sweeping, cleaning wooden forms to prep for the next pour, and assisting with plant start-up and ongoing production activities.
- Follow all safety procedures, including safe lifting, tool use, and material handling practices throughout the workday.
- Work collaboratively with production teams to meet daily output goals and maintain a clean, organized work area.
- Demonstrated mechanical aptitude with experience using power tools and hand tools in a labor or construction setting.
- Prior labor experience in physically demanding environments, such as construction, manufacturing, or general labor.
- Ability to accurately read and use a tape measure for layout, cutting, and verification of dimensions.
- Capability to lift and move heavy materials, including assisting with two-person lifts of items up to approximately 100 pounds.
- Comfort working from blueprints and piece drawings to follow instructions for mold setup and concrete placement.
- Willingness and ability to work flexible hours, understanding that daily end times can vary based on production needs.
- Reliable transportation to and from the worksite to meet scheduled shifts.
- Ability to follow safety guidelines and use personal protective equipment as required.
- Capacity to work in a fast-paced, industrial environment that involves dust, dirt, and exposure to outdoor-like temperatures.
- Professional construction experience in areas such as carpentry, concrete work, demolition, or framing is preferred.
- Experience in precast concrete production or concrete finishing is an advantage.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints with confidence is highly desirable.
- Familiarity with general labor tasks in a plant or manufacturing environment.
- Strong attention to detail when measuring, laying out beds, and setting up forms.
- Comfort using equipment such as screeds and laser screeds for concrete finishing.
- Willingness to learn specialized precast processes, including exposed aggregate washing and dunnage placement.
- Dependable work habits, including punctuality and consistent attendance.
You join a production team that plays a key role in creating structural components used in major commercial and residential projects. The work offers consistent full-time hours with opportunities for overtime, allowing you to build your skills in concrete, carpentry, and general construction within a hands-on environment. You gain exposure to specialized precast processes and equipment, which can support long-term growth in the construction and manufacturing industries. The culture values reliability, teamwork, and a strong work ethic, giving you the chance to contribute directly to visible, large-scale projects.
Work EnvironmentThis position is based in an industrial precast concrete plant where large concrete forms are manufactured and prepared for shipment to construction sites. The environment is physically demanding, with frequent standing, bending, lifting, and moving of materials such as mesh, rebar, and tools throughout the shift. The facility does not have climate control, so it can be very cold in the winter and hot in the summer, and the work area can be dusty and dirty due to ongoing concrete and construction activities. Typical hours fall between approximately 5–7 AM and 3–5 PM, Monday through Friday, with occasional Saturdays as production requires, averaging about 40–46 hours per week. You work with hand tools, power tools, concrete finishing tools, and equipment such as laser screeds, following safety protocols and wearing appropriate work attire and protective gear suitable for a rugged, industrial setting.
