Job Description

The Laboratory Technician is responsible for performing tests on samples for quantitative analysis, quality control, and process control, while maintaining laboratory equipment and ensuring a safe, organized laboratory environment. This role supports accurate analytical reporting, compliance with industry and regulatory standards, and effective laboratory operations on the night shift.

Responsibilities

  • Receive, review, and clearly understand work orders for all incoming samples.
  • Perform required analyses on samples in accordance with customer specifications, industry standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Document all test results accurately, neatly, and in a timely manner.
  • Prepare clear and complete analytical reports based on test results.
  • Conduct quality assurance and quality control testing and assist with maintaining and interpreting control charts.
  • Maintain laboratory instruments and equipment, including routine checks, cleaning, and minor troubleshooting.
  • Monitor and replenish laboratory supplies to ensure continuous operations.
  • Follow established laboratory procedures, methods, and protocols for testing and reporting.
  • Comply with all safety requirements for this safety-sensitive position, including pre-employment, random, and annual drug and alcohol testing.
  • Adhere to all safety guidelines, training procedures, and use of personal protective equipment in the laboratory.
  • Collaborate and communicate effectively with coworkers, outside consultants, and leadership to support laboratory activities.
  • Perform other related laboratory duties as assigned to support overall operations.

Essential Skills

  • Degree in chemistry, biology, or another science-related field.
  • Basic computer skills for data entry, documentation, and report preparation.
  • Solid foundation in mathematics and general science concepts applicable to laboratory work.
  • Ability to learn new laboratory procedures and methods and apply them accurately.
  • Ability to work independently following completion of training and demonstrate good judgment in routine tasks.
  • Effective communication skills to interact with employees, outside consultants, and management.
  • Thorough understanding of safety practices and training requirements in a laboratory environment.
  • Experience or familiarity with quality control and quality assurance processes.
  • Knowledge of analytical chemistry principles and laboratory techniques.
  • Ability to pass required drug and alcohol testing.
  • Ability to pass annual pulmonary fitness and respirator fit testing.
  • Ability to pass physical examinations to confirm the ability to perform essential job functions.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods during laboratory work.
  • Ability to lift and carry boxes weighing up to 45 pounds.
  • Ability to work in the presence of petroleum or petrochemical odors without allergic reactions or nausea when exposure levels are within OSHA-designated permissible exposure limits.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with gas or oil testing in a laboratory setting.
  • Experience working in a laboratory focused on quality control and quality assurance.
  • Familiarity with GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) or similar quality standards.
  • Experience in analytical chemistry and QC testing.
  • Ability to interpret and maintain control charts for process monitoring.

Work Environment

Work is primarily performed in a stand-alone third-party laboratory environment on the night shift from 8:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m., with initial training conducted on the first shift from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The role involves working in a laboratory setting with occasional trips to collect or deliver samples. Employees may be exposed to fumes, airborne particles, and toxic or caustic chemicals; product information, training, engineering controls, and personal protective equipment are provided to help protect against these exposures. Employees are expected to read and understand product information, utilize available engineering controls, follow established safety guidelines and training procedures, and wear and properly use required personal protective equipment, including respiratory protection when needed. The noise level in the laboratory is typically moderate. The environment may include petroleum or petrochemical odors, maintained within OSHA-designated permissible exposure limits. The dress code requires appropriate laboratory attire, including the use of PPE such as lab coats, gloves, eye protection, and respirators as required by specific tasks.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract position based out of Memphis, TN.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $23.00 - $24.50/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
