Job Summary
The Machinist is a highly skilled professional responsible for independently programming, setting up, and operating CNC machining equipment to manufacture precision components. The position requires advanced machining knowledge, the ability to program and modify programs directly at the machine, select and set up tooling, troubleshoot machining issues, and run production efficiently with minimal supervision.
The ideal candidate will have strong experience in one or more of the following areas:
Primary Machining Requirements
1. Okuma CNC Lathe – Programming & Operation
· Ability to independently set up, operate, and program Okuma CNC lathes.
· Minimum 1 year experience required programming directly at the machine using the Okuma One Touch / IGF programming system.
· Ability to write, modify, troubleshoot, and optimize programs for production machining.
2. 3-Axis Tsugami CNC – Programming & Operation
· Ability to independently set up and operate 3-axis Tsugami CNC machines.
· Ability to program and modify CNC programs directly at the machine.
· Ability to select appropriate tooling, workholding, feeds, speeds, and machining processes for production parts.
3. Bridgeport CNC Mill – FANUC Controls
· Ability to independently set up and operate Bridgeport CNC mills equipped with FANUC controls.
· Ability to program and modify CNC programs using FANUC controls directly at the machine.
· Ability to perform milling operations including drilling, tapping, boring, profiling, and other precision machining operations.
Experience in all three areas is strongly preferred. Candidates with strong experience in one or more of these areas may be considered based on overall machining experience and skill level.
Duties and Responsibilities
· Independently program, set up, and operate CNC lathes, CNC mills, and other machine tools.
· Write, modify, and troubleshoot CNC programs directly at the machine.
· Program Okuma CNC lathes using One Touch / IGF or comparable CNC programming systems.
· Set up and operate 3-axis Tsugami CNC machines and modify programs as required.
· Set up and operate Bridgeport CNC mills using FANUC controls and perform program edits as required.
· Set up machines from raw material to finished part, including tooling selection, offsets, workholding, and tool setup.
· Select appropriate cutting tools, inserts, fixtures, feeds, speeds, and machining processes.
· Read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, and specifications to ensure dimensional accuracy and compliance.
· Operate CNC lathes, mills, and other fabrication machinery to produce precision components.
· Inspect and measure completed parts using calipers, micrometers, indicators, and other precision measuring instruments.
· Adjust programs, offsets, tooling, or machine settings to correct dimensional or machining issues.
· Troubleshoot machining and production issues to maintain efficiency, quality, and repeatability.
· Manufacture new parts and repair or modify existing parts as required.
· Inspect machinery for required maintenance and perform minor repairs within the scope of expertise.
· Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area and ensure proper care of machines and tooling.
· Comply with all applicable safety standards and company policies.
· Maintain regular and reliable attendance.
· Assist with training and mentoring other machinists as needed.
· Perform other related duties as assigned.
Required Skills and Abilities
· Extensive experience operating and programming CNC machining equipment.
· Strong CNC lathe programming and setup experience.
· Ability to program, edit, and troubleshoot CNC programs directly at the machine.
· Experience with Okuma One Touch / IGF programming.
· Experience with 3-axis Tsugami CNC machines.
· Experience with Bridgeport CNC mills using FANUC controls.
· Strong understanding of machine setup, tooling, feeds, speeds, workholding, and machining processes.
· Excellent mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills.
· Ability to read and interpret complex production drawings and specifications.
· Proficient with precision measuring instruments and geometric tolerancing.
· Strong attention to detail with a focus on quality, dimensional accuracy, and repeatability.
· Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
· Strong organizational and time-management skills.
· Ability to troubleshoot machining problems and determine appropriate corrective actions.
· Ability to work collaboratively and mentor other machinists.
· Working knowledge of basic mathematics and computer skills.
Preferred Tools
· Personal 12-inch caliper
· Micrometers appropriate for typical production tolerances
· Hand grinder
· 12-inch scale
· Magnetic base with dial indicator
· Test indicator
· Basic hand tools, including Allen wrenches, Torx set, and general hand tools required for setup and alignment
Education and Experience
· High school diploma or equivalent required.
· Minimum of 1 year of CNC machining experience, with strong experience in CNC lathe operations.
· Experience programming CNC machines directly at the machine.
· Experience with Okuma One Touch / IGF, Tsugami CNC, and/or FANUC-controlled Bridgeport CNC mills strongly preferred.
· Experience machining thermowells or similar precision production components strongly preferred.
· Vocational or technical training, certification, or apprenticeship preferred.
Physical Requirements
· Ability to lift up to 50 pounds unassisted for approximately 25% of the average workday.
· Prolonged standing with repetitive motions, including bending, stooping, pushing, reaching, and pulling.
· Vision requirements include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust and focus.
· Ability to work in and tolerate exposure to typical noises and odors associated with a production facility.
