Job Description

Financial & Tax Data Analyst

Remote – Texas | Central Time Zone Preferred

Contract-to-Hire | Monday–Friday | 8:00 AM–5:00 PM CST

About the Role

We're looking for a detail-oriented Financial & Tax Data Analyst who enjoys working with numbers, investigating discrepancies and making sure financial and tax information is accurate.

This is not a traditional IT position and it's not a software development role.

The position sits at the intersection of Tax, Accounting, Finance and data, with a significant portion of the work focused on sales tax processing and maintaining accurate information within Vertex and Eclipse.

Some of the work is straightforward and transactional—data entry, reviewing sales tax information, researching transactions, correcting information and making sure records are processed accurately.

Other situations require more investigation. That's where SQL becomes important.

You don't need to be a SQL developer or database expert, but you do need to be comfortable working with SQL independently. You should be able to write and modify queries, work with JOINs, pull information from multiple tables and use the data to help determine what happened.

What You'll Be Doing

Your day could include:

  • Performing sales tax-related processing and data-entry activities
  • Working extensively within Vertex and Eclipse
  • Reviewing and maintaining sales tax and financial information
  • Researching transactions for accuracy
  • Identifying and correcting data discrepancies
  • Reconciling financial and tax-related information
  • Running SQL queries to investigate transactions and data issues
  • Using JOINs and querying multiple tables when additional research is necessary
  • Supporting Tax, Accounting and Finance with data and transaction questions
  • Working with General Ledger, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable and related financial information
  • Researching production issues and helping determine root causes
  • Validating that transactions have moved correctly between systems
  • Using Excel to analyze and reconcile data
  • Assisting with testing and User Acceptance Testing (UAT) when system changes are introduced
  • Communicating findings clearly to both business and technical teams
  • Maintaining accurate documentation and following established processes

SQL – Important, But Not a Developer Role

SQL will be a regular part of the job, but we're not looking for a SQL programmer.

We're looking for someone who is better than intermediate and comfortable enough to investigate data without needing someone else to write every query.

You should understand:

  • SELECT statements
  • WHERE clauses
  • JOINs
  • Working with multiple tables
  • Sorting and filtering data
  • Basic aggregations
  • Identifying missing or incorrect records
  • Modifying existing queries
  • Writing your own queries to research a problem

If Tax or Accounting says, "These transactions don't look right," you should be comfortable getting into the data and helping figure out why.

What We're Looking For

  • Sales tax experience
  • Experience working with financial or accounting data
  • Vertex experience strongly preferred
  • Eclipse experience strongly preferred
  • Good SQL skills – better than intermediate
  • Ability to independently write and modify SQL queries
  • Experience with JOINs
  • Strong data-entry accuracy and attention to detail
  • Financial reconciliation experience
  • Understanding of GL, AP, AR or related accounting processes
  • Strong Excel skills, including Pivot Tables and XLOOKUP/VLOOKUP
  • Analytical and investigative mindset
  • Ability to work effectively with Tax, Accounting, Finance and technical teams
  • Comfortable performing both detailed transactional work and analytical problem-solving
  • Ability to work independently in a remote environment

The Person Who Will Do Well Here

This role needs someone who doesn't mind the details.

Some days you'll be working through sales tax transactions in Vertex and Eclipse, entering or correcting information and making sure everything is accurate. Other days you'll need to dig deeper, run SQL queries and figure out why something isn't reconciling correctly.

You need to be equally comfortable doing both.

This isn't a position for someone who only wants high-level analysis, and it isn't simply a data-entry job either. The value is in having someone who understands the transactional work well enough to recognize when something isn't right—and has the analytical ability to investigate it.

If you're comfortable with sales tax, good with data, know your way around SQL and genuinely enjoy figuring out why the numbers don't match, this could be a very good fit.
