Job Description
Position Overview
We are seeking a dependable, detail-oriented Legal Assistant to support a busy family-law practice. The ideal candidate is organized, professional, compassionate with clients, and able to manage competing deadlines in a fast-paced environment. This role provides direct administrative and legal-support assistance in divorce, custody, child-support, and related domestic-relations matters.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare, format, proofread, file, and serve routine legal documents, correspondence, discovery, and court materials.
- Maintain electronic and physical case files, including pleadings, exhibits, discovery, correspondence, and client records.
- Calendar court dates, filing deadlines, meetings, and internal follow-up tasks; monitor deadlines and provide timely reminders.
- Communicate professionally and sensitively with clients, opposing counsel, court personnel, and third-party providers.
- Assist with client intake, document collection, appointment scheduling, and follow-up communications.
- Organize financial records, discovery materials, and exhibits for attorney review.
- Coordinate filings and service of process, including electronic filing where applicable.
- Support hearing, mediation, deposition, and trial preparation.
- Enter and maintain accurate information in the firm’s practice-management and document-management systems.
- Protect confidential client information and follow all firm procedures and ethical obligations.
Required Qualifications
- Prior experience as a legal assistant, legal secretary, paralegal, or comparable administrative professional; family-law experience is strongly preferred.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong organization, attention to detail, and ability to prioritize work under deadline.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Word, Outlook, Excel, and PDF-editing software.
- Ability to learn and use legal case-management, calendaring, and e-filing systems.
- Professional judgment, discretion, reliability, and a client-service mindset.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating closely with attorneys and staff.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supporting divorce, parenting-plan, child-custody, child-support, or other domestic-relations matters.
- Familiarity with court filing procedures and local family-court practice.
- Experience preparing discovery, organizing financial documents, and assembling hearing or trial exhibits.
