Job Description
POSITION SUMMARY: The Plant Engineer position develops and implements optimal, cost-effective manufacturing processes and methods in accordance with product specifications and quality standards; recommends and implements improvements to production processes, methods, and controls; coordinates manufacturing launch for new or revised products.
RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES: Employees must be able to perform the essential functions of the job. The essential functions of the position include, but are not limited to the following:
- Carries out process improvement, problem resolution, project management, and employee training.
- Improves manufacturing processes and methods for cost-reduction, quality improvement and efficiency.
- Prepares and presents plans for the above and coordinates deployment, including training of team members.
- Assists plant management in improving a system of production control, standard operating procedures, safety, quality control and training.
- Performs research, design and development of manufacturing processes including production flow, assembly methods and production equipment.
- Prepares and maintains detailed layouts of buildings and equipment.
- Coordinates the manufacturing launch of new/revised products including establishing goals, training team members and evaluating results.
- Designs, develops, tests, and/or sources and cost-justifies various tools, machinery, and equipment for recommended manufacturing methods.
- Performs product/process analysis for cost reduction, quality improvement, and improved efficiency.
- Represents manufacturing on cross-functional teams.
- All other related duties as required.
EDUCATION/SPECIAL SKILLS/EXPERIENCE/TRAINING:
- Education/Work Experience: Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Technology, Manufacturing Engineering, or related field with a minimum of three (3) years’ experience in a manufacturing process support role. Automation integration and project management experience preferred.
- Language Ability: Must have the interpersonal and communication skills to work in a high employee involvement environment, translating items into effective change for improvement.
- Math Ability: Proficient mathematical and computer skills
- Reasoning Ability: Ability to systematically work through problems and analysis; can work with deadlines individually or as part of a team.
- Computer Skills: Computer-assisted design (CAD) proficiency. Visual Basic, VBA for MS Excel, as well as ERP experience/skills desired, but not required
- Travel Requirements: Ability to travel as required but expected to be approximately less than ten (10%) percent of the time.
- Other (including certifications and licenses): Must be skilled at the practical application of engineering principles in analyzing and developing solutions for process problems and limitations. Must be a self-starter capable of organizing work without direct supervision. Successful practice in the areas of process troubleshooting, root cause analysis, process optimization, implementation of statistical process control, implementing permanent corrective actions and start-ups of new process equipment is preferred. Experience and knowledge with handling a variety of resins, such as PS, PP, PE, LLDPE, EVOH and SBC’s is a plus. Experience with extruding and/or thermoforming PS foam is desired. Prior experience and/or training in Lean Manufacturing is required. Previous experience in an SQF certified facility a plus.
SCHEDULE REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Monday – Friday or As Needed.
- Work Environment: Manufacturing environment.
- Physical Demands: The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 15 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
- Work Environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts and vibration. The noise level in the work environment and job sites can be loud.
LOCATION REQUIREMENT: Local candidates preferred/required. No relocation package or relocation support is provided.
