The Housing Specialist is responsible for assisting individuals and families experiencing homelessness in securing and maintaining safe, stable, and permanent housing. This role works closely with shelter residents, case management staff, landlords, and community partners to identify housing opportunities, coordinate placements, and support successful transitions from shelter to housing.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct housing assessments to evaluate clients’ housing needs, eligibility, barriers, and preferences
- Develop individualized housing plans in collaboration with clients and case management staff
- Identify and maintain relationships with landlords, property managers, brokers, and housing providers
- Assist clients with housing applications, lease signings, inspections, and move-in coordination
- Support clients in gathering required documentation (IDs, income verification, benefits, etc.)
- Coordinate housing placements through local, state, and federal housing programs (e.g., supportive housing, vouchers, subsidized housing, rapid rehousing)
- Advocate on behalf of clients with landlords and housing agencies to overcome housing barriers
- Provide housing retention support, including mediation, follow-up visits, and referrals to supportive services
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation in HMIS and other required databases
- Participate in case conferences, housing meetings, and interdisciplinary team discussions
- Stay informed of housing resources, eligibility requirements, and fair housing regulations
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Human Services, Psychology, or a related field preferred
- Minimum of 2 years of experience working with individuals experiencing homelessness or housing instability
- Knowledge of local housing resources, subsidies, and shelter-to-housing systems
