Position Overview
M Force Partners is seeking an experienced Prototype Fabrication Technician (Machine Operator) to support new product development through precision fabrication, machining, welding, and prototype assembly. This hands-on position will manufacture production-quality prototypes used for design validation, vehicle fitment, product testing, and development activities.
The ideal Prototype Fabrication Technician (Machine Operator) has a strong background in CNC equipment, sheet metal fabrication, welding, machining, and finishing processes. This individual will work closely with engineering and product development teams to transform CAD designs and engineering drawings into high-quality physical prototypes.
This Prototype Fabrication Technician (Machine Operator) role is well suited for someone who enjoys custom fabrication and one-off builds rather than repetitive production work and takes pride in producing precise, cosmetic-quality components.
Key Responsibilities
- Manufacture production-quality prototypes for automotive, powersports, and vehicle accessory applications
- Operate CNC laser cutting equipment to produce precision sheet metal components and flat patterns
- Set up and operate CNC press brakes for sheet metal forming and bending
- Perform machining operations using drill presses, mini mills, and other machine shop equipment
- Perform MIG and TIG welding on prototype components and fabricated assemblies
- Fabricate, fit, and assemble sheet metal and mechanical components
- Perform deburring, grinding, sanding, and other finishing operations
- Prepare components for paint and powder coating
- Perform powder coating spraying and curing processes
- Read and interpret detailed 2D engineering drawings, fabrication prints, and assembly drawings
- Assemble prototype components using appropriate fasteners, hardware, and fabrication techniques
- Generate, prepare, and manage STEP and DXF manufacturing files
- Collaborate with engineering teams to identify Design for Manufacturability (DFM) improvements
- Participate in design reviews and provide feedback regarding fabrication methods and manufacturability
- Manage prototype materials, sheet metal, hardware, welding supplies, and shop consumables
- Perform routine preventive maintenance on CNC and fabrication equipment
- Coordinate outside machine service and repairs when necessary
- Develop and maintain Standard Operating Procedures for fabrication equipment and shop processes
- Research new fabrication equipment, prototyping technologies, tooling, and manufacturing methods
- Maintain a safe, clean, organized, and efficient fabrication environment
- Track prototype projects, priorities, and completion status using project management software
Required Qualifications
- Associate degree in CNC Manufacturing, Manufacturing Technology, Machine Tool Technology, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent hands-on experience
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in manufacturing, metal fabrication, prototype fabrication, custom machining, or a related environment
- Hands-on experience operating CNC fabrication equipment and machine shop tools
- Experience with sheet metal fabrication, forming, and welding
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, fabrication prints, and assembly drawings
- Experience producing precision or cosmetic-quality fabricated components
- Experience with powder coating preparation, application, and curing processes
- Familiarity with machine maintenance and preventive maintenance practices
- Strong mechanical aptitude and equipment troubleshooting skills
- Ability to work accurately on custom and one-off components
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to craftsmanship
- Ability to work collaboratively with engineering and product development teams
Preferred Qualifications
- CNC laser cutting experience
- CNC press brake setup and operation experience
- MIG and TIG welding experience
- Prototype development or prototype shop experience
- Custom machining or low-volume fabrication experience
- Knowledge of Design for Manufacturability (DFM)
- Experience working with STEP and DXF files
- SolidWorks or other CAD software experience
- Automotive, powersports, off-road, or vehicle accessory fabrication experience
