Job Description
Position Summary
The Purchasing Agent / Buyer is responsible for supporting purchasing and supply chain activities for manufacturing operations. This position works closely with suppliers, manufacturing, inventory, and operations teams to ensure materials, components, equipment, and services are purchased at competitive pricing and delivered according to production requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Source and purchase raw materials, manufactured components, equipment, tooling, supplies, and outside services required for production.
- Create, issue, and maintain purchase orders while ensuring pricing, quantities, specifications, and delivery dates are accurate.
- Obtain and evaluate supplier quotes based on price, quality, lead time, and availability.
- Negotiate pricing, delivery schedules, payment terms, and other purchasing conditions with suppliers.
- Coordinate closely with manufacturing and production teams regarding material requirements, deliveries, shortages, and special orders.
- Monitor open purchase orders and follow up with vendors to ensure materials arrive on schedule.
- Expedite critical or past-due materials to prevent production delays and downtime.
- Assist with inventory management by reviewing stock levels, demand, usage, and purchasing requirements.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with existing suppliers while identifying potential new vendors.
- Resolve supplier issues involving late deliveries, incorrect quantities, pricing discrepancies, damaged materials, or quality concerns.
- Maintain accurate purchasing documentation, vendor records, quotes, purchase orders, and related files.
- Work with Accounting/AP to resolve invoice and purchase-order discrepancies.
- Support cost-reduction initiatives by identifying alternative suppliers, negotiating better pricing, and evaluating purchasing trends.
- Ensure purchasing activities comply with company policies, approved supplier requirements, and applicable purchasing terms.
- Communicate effectively with Operations, Manufacturing, Engineering, Quality, Inventory, and Accounting departments.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required; associate or bachelor's degree in Supply Chain, Business, Procurement, Logistics, or a related field preferred.
- Previous experience in purchasing, procurement, buying, supply chain, or inventory control.
- Manufacturing or oil & gas industry experience strongly preferred.
- Experience purchasing raw materials, machined components, fabricated parts, industrial supplies, or manufacturing-related materials is beneficial.
- Strong vendor negotiation and supplier-management skills.
- Ability to read and understand purchase orders, quotes, invoices, specifications, and manufacturing requirements.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple purchase orders and priorities simultaneously.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Outlook, and purchasing/ERP systems.
- Strong communication, analytical, problem-solving, and follow-up skills.
