Job Description

COMMERCIAL REFRIGERATION SERVICE TECHNICIAN

MJ Refrigeration LLC – Houston, Texas
Full-Time | Experienced / Senior-Level Technician

MJ Refrigeration LLC is seeking a seasoned Commercial Refrigeration Service Technician to join our growing service team. We are looking for an experienced technician who can independently diagnose, repair, maintain, and commission commercial and industrial refrigeration systems.

This position is intended for an experienced refrigeration professional—not an entry-level HVAC technician. The ideal candidate has strong refrigeration, electrical, controls, and troubleshooting skills and is comfortable working independently in commercial, industrial, food-processing, cold-storage, and distribution facilities.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

The Commercial Refrigeration Service Technician will be responsible for:

  • Diagnose and repair commercial and industrial refrigeration systems.
  • Troubleshoot refrigeration systems using pressure, temperature, electrical, and control-system readings.
  • Service medium-temperature and low-temperature refrigeration equipment.
  • Troubleshoot and repair:
    • Condensing units
    • Refrigeration racks
    • Compressors
    • Evaporators
    • Air-cooled condensers
    • Expansion valves
    • Solenoid valves
    • Pressure controls
    • Oil pressure controls
    • Defrost systems
    • Refrigeration controls
    • Electrical components
    • Motors and fan systems
  • Perform compressor replacements and system startups.
  • Perform leak detection and refrigeration system repairs.
  • Recover, evacuate, and properly charge refrigeration systems.
  • Verify superheat, subcooling, operating pressures, and system performance.
  • Diagnose compressor failures and determine probable root cause before replacement.
  • Troubleshoot electrical circuits, contactors, relays, motor starters, safeties, and control circuits.
  • Read and interpret electrical schematics and refrigeration piping diagrams.
  • Perform scheduled preventive maintenance.
  • Identify developing equipment problems before they result in system failure.
  • Complete accurate service reports, equipment readings, photographs, and customer documentation.
  • Communicate repair recommendations clearly with customers, management, and other technicians.
  • Assist with refrigeration equipment installations, replacements, and system commissioning when required.
  • Participate in emergency and after-hours service rotation.
  • Maintain company vehicle, tools, test instruments, and assigned equipment in professional condition.
  • Follow company safety procedures and accepted refrigeration industry practices.

EXPERIENCE WE ARE LOOKING FOR

Candidates should have substantial hands-on experience with commercial refrigeration systems.

Preferred experience includes:

  • Commercial refrigeration service
  • Industrial refrigeration applications
  • Walk-in coolers and freezers
  • Cold-storage facilities
  • Food-processing facilities
  • Refrigeration rack systems
  • Multiple-compressor systems
  • Medium- and low-temperature applications
  • Refrigeration controls
  • Compressor diagnosis and replacement
  • Electrical troubleshooting
  • Refrigerant piping
  • System evacuation and charging
  • Leak detection
  • Preventive maintenance
  • Equipment startup and commissioning

Experience with refrigerants such as R-404A, R-407A, R-448A, R-449A and similar commercial refrigeration refrigerants is highly desirable.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum 5 years of commercial refrigeration service experience preferred.
  • Strong refrigeration troubleshooting ability.
  • Strong electrical troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to read electrical schematics and wiring diagrams.
  • Ability to understand refrigeration pressure/temperature relationships.
  • Working knowledge of superheat and subcooling.

  • Ability to communicate professionally with customers and coworkers.
  • Ability to participate in an on-call / emergency service rotation.
  • Ability to work overtime when project or service demands require it.

THE TECHNICIAN WE WANT

We are particularly interested in technicians who can arrive at a refrigeration problem, evaluate the entire system, and determine why the failure occurred—not simply replace the failed component.

A strong candidate should be able to independently diagnose situations such as:

  • Compressor trips and failures
  • Low suction conditions
  • High head pressure
  • Liquid floodback
  • Compressor overheating
  • Loss of refrigerant
  • Oil-pressure problems
  • Defrost failures
  • TXV and refrigerant-feed problems
  • Airflow problems
  • Electrical failures
  • Control failures
  • Evaporator icing
  • Condenser problems
  • Intermittent refrigeration faults

We value technicians who use proper diagnostic procedures rather than replacing parts until the problem disappears.

PHYSICAL / WORK REQUIREMENTS

Commercial refrigeration service can be physically demanding. Candidates must be capable of:

  • Working in coolers and freezers.
  • Working outdoors in Texas weather conditions.
  • Working from ladders and elevated work areas.
  • Working around operating industrial and food-processing equipment.
  • Lifting and carrying tools, parts, refrigerant cylinders, and equipment associated with refrigeration service.
  • Working occasional nights, weekends, and extended hours when emergency service or project conditions require it.

COMPENSATION

Competitive hourly compensation based on demonstrated commercial refrigeration experience and technical ability.

Pay level will be determined based on factors including:

  • Commercial refrigeration experience
  • Rack refrigeration experience
  • Electrical troubleshooting ability
  • Controls experience
  • Compressor and system diagnostic ability
  • Certifications
  • Ability to independently handle service calls
  • Leadership and field experience

Experienced technicians with advanced refrigeration troubleshooting abilities are encouraged to apply.

We are looking for someone who takes pride in being a refrigeration technician and professional tradesman, understands the importance of doing the job correctly, and wants to build a long-term career with a refrigeration-focused company.
