The Phlebotomist and Lab Processor collects blood specimens, label each specimen vial or container appropriately and processes the specimens within the LIS as ordered by the physician/provider. The specimens are then turned over to the lab for testing.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Collect samples from patients.
  • Practice proper patient identification for samples.
  • Label vials and containers with correction patient names and dates.
  • Verify specimen integrity, match labels to requisitions, sort samples for in-house testing or external reference labs.
  • Decipher the best method for drawing blood depending on a specific patient.
  • Conduct proper sample packaging and/or processes prior to sending to lab for further testing.
  • Provide helpful, courteous, and friendly service when working with patients.
  • Must maintain clean, sterile and organized lab station for patients.
  • Must practice proper infection control standards at all times when working with patients and equipment.
  • May be required to in put testing data into electronic medical records.
  • May be required to change dressings, apply bandages, remove sutures administer CPR and other first aid procedures.
  • Perform accurate, legal and ethical documentation at all times.
  • May be required to prepare and administer medications with physician authorizations.
  • Dispose of biohazard waste according to OSHA standards.

REQUIRED SKILLS:

Understands short notes, basic written instructions and forms such as physician lab prescriptions. Writes short informal notes, fills out simple forms. Occasional use of more complex machines including word processors or personal computers. Performs a few simple laboratory or scientific procedures, records results as necessary. Good communication skills for working with patients.

POSITION SPECIFICATIONS: EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Associate of Applied Science Degree from accredited college program – to prepare for certification as a Phlebotomist. Two years of related experience and a high school level education or an equivalent combination of experience and education. Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as statistical inference. Ability to apply concept such as percentages, ratios and proportions to practical solutions.
