Position Overview
The Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) provides direct patient care and clinical support in a correctional healthcare setting. Working as part of an interdisciplinary healthcare team, the LVN participates in patient assessment, data collection, treatment implementation, medication administration, patient education, and ongoing evaluation of care.
The LVN works closely with Registered Nurses, physicians, psychiatric providers, and other healthcare professionals to ensure patients receive safe, timely, and appropriate care. Responsibilities include medication administration, vital-sign collection, chart reviews, coordination with psychiatric providers, specimen collection, and documentation in accordance with facility policies, professional standards, and the Nursing Practice Act (NPA).
This position requires the ability to provide compassionate, professional healthcare while maintaining appropriate security procedures and boundaries within a structured correctional environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with the assessment and collection of physical, psychological, and social health information from patients in the correctional setting.
- Participate in developing and implementing individualized treatment plans under the direction of RNs, physicians, and other qualified healthcare providers.
- Obtain and document patient vital signs and other clinical information for review by psychiatric and medical providers.
- Conduct chart reviews and collaborate closely with psychiatric prescribers regarding patient care, treatment needs, and follow-up.
- Provide competency restoration services in individual and group settings in accordance with established treatment plans.
- Administer medications safely and accurately in accordance with healthcare provider orders, established protocols, and scope of practice.
- Apply appropriate pharmacological knowledge when administering medications, including awareness of potential adverse reactions, medication interactions, and overdose risks.
- Obtain and process diagnostic specimens, including body-fluid specimens, as ordered by healthcare providers.
- Communicate patient information and referrals to nursing staff, physicians, psychiatric providers, supervisory personnel, and ancillary departments as appropriate.
- Complete accurate and timely clinical documentation in accordance with facility and healthcare policies.
- Conduct required counts of controlled substances, syringes, needles, and sharps at the beginning of each shift with another authorized staff member and maintain required documentation.
- Follow established infection-control practices, safety procedures, standard precautions, and correctional healthcare protocols.
- Maintain patient confidentiality and professional boundaries while providing care in a secure correctional environment.
- Recognize and respond appropriately to changes in a patient's condition and promptly communicate concerns to the appropriate healthcare provider or supervisor.
- Work collaboratively with custody and healthcare personnel while maintaining the nurse's professional responsibilities and patient-care standards.
- Perform duties within the LVN's demonstrated competencies, scope of practice, facility policies, and applicable state regulations.
- Maintain access to appropriate clinical supervision and follow established policies, procedures, and guidelines for nursing practice in the correctional setting.
- Support a safe, respectful, and therapeutic healthcare environment for patients and staff.
Qualifications
Education
- Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing.
Experience
- One (1) or more years of clinical experience preferred.
- Previous correctional healthcare experience preferred.
- Experience working with patients with behavioral health or psychiatric needs is a plus.
Licenses & Certifications
- Current LVN/LPN license in the state of employment.
- Current CPR certification required.
