The Instrumentation and Controls Engineer will specify, procure, and document instrumentation for large frame gas turbines, with a strong focus on control logic, I/O list development, and compliance with industry standards. This role supports project engineering, bid assessments, and new gas turbine builds by ensuring that all instrumentation and control systems meet contract requirements, technical specifications, and schedule commitments. The engineer will collaborate closely with internal teams, clients, suppliers, and contractors, and will occasionally travel to project sites to provide troubleshooting, commissioning, and field support.

Responsibilities
  • Specify and procure instrumentation for large frame gas turbines in accordance with project and contractual requirements.
  • Create, maintain, and manage I/O lists and all supporting instrumentation documentation for gas turbine control systems.
  • Develop, process, and refine control logic, including the creation and maintenance of gas turbine control logic documentation.
  • Support project engineering in addressing all customer gas turbine instrumentation questions and requirements.
  • Participate in bid assessment and provide technical support for new gas turbine builds.
  • Determine customer instrumentation and control contract requirements, including delivery dates and key milestones.
  • Develop instrumentation procurement schedules that align with overall project timelines.
  • Prepare detailed instrumentation technical specifications and Requests for Quotes (RFQs).
  • Review and verify supplier quotes for technical accuracy and compliance with project specifications.
  • Verify all instrumentation against system P&IDs and create comprehensive instrument lists.
  • Create instrument loops and detailed data sheets for instrumentation.
  • Produce and update drawings for instrumentation, ensuring alignment with project standards and customer expectations.
  • Prepare all design input documents required for the creation of accurate I/O lists.
  • Liaise with clients, suppliers, contractors, project management, and relevant authorities within cost and time-constrained environments.
  • Collaborate with design engineers, operations engineers, purchasers, sales and marketing, and other internal staff to support project execution.
  • Resolve customer comments and feedback on all responsible drawings and documentation.
  • Create and maintain I&C procedures, checklists, and best practices for instrumentation and control systems.
  • Troubleshoot and solve instrumentation and control issues at various project sites as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable technical standards and regulations in the countries where projects are executed.
  • Interpret and apply relevant codes and standards such as ISA, ANSI/NEMA, NFPA, and AGA.
  • Support new vendor qualification activities when required.
  • Conduct Factory Acceptance Tests (FATs) for instrumentation when needed.
  • Support field operations by assisting with on-site installation of instrumentation when necessary.
  • Provide start-up commissioning, operations support, and troubleshooting for equipment failures, including performing root cause analysis and implementing corrective solutions.
  • Travel up to approximately 15% of the time to project sites, vendor facilities, or customer locations.
Essential Skills
  • At least 5 years of relevant instrumentation and controls (I&C) experience in power plants, process or chemical plants, or oil and gas environments.
  • Strong knowledge of instrumentation for large frame gas turbines and balance of plant (BOP) systems.
  • Hands-on experience with instrumentation specification, selection, and procurement.
  • Proficiency in creating and managing I/O lists and understanding I/O count and signal interfaces.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and verify P&IDs (Process and Instrumentation Diagrams) and other technical drawings.
  • Practical understanding of process instrumentation including pressure transmitters, switches, gauges, control valves, thermocouples, RTDs, vibration sensors, speed sensors, positioners, LVDTs, level instruments, calorimeters, and CEMS/emissions instrumentation.
  • Experience in creating instrument loops, data sheets, and instrumentation drawings.
  • Ability to interpret and apply industry standards and codes such as ISA, ANSI/NEMA, NFPA, and AGA.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills in instrumentation and control systems.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions in complex technical environments.
  • Capability to interpret extensive technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and manage both abstract and concrete variables.
  • Strong written communication skills, including the ability to write technical reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Effective verbal communication skills, with the ability to present information and respond to questions from managers, clients, and customers.
  • Solid mathematical skills, including probability, statistical inference, plane and solid geometry, trigonometry, and the application of fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical engineering situations.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree (BS) in Engineering from a four-year college or university, preferably in a discipline related to instrumentation and controls or power engineering.
  • At least five (5) years of related experience and/or training in specific I&C disciplines applicable to power plants, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Highly desirable experience with control valves, including specification, selection, and application.
  • Experience and general understanding of Smart Plant Instrumentation (SPI) and Smart Plant 3D (S3D).
  • Familiarity with plant processing and control systems such as Netmation, MK5, MK6, Complicity, T3000, R3000, Simatic, Ovation, and Delta V.
  • Experience conducting Factory Acceptance Tests (FATs) for instrumentation.
  • Experience supporting field operations, including on-site installation, start-up commissioning, and operations support.
  • Background in performing root cause analysis for equipment failures and implementing effective corrective actions.
  • Ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams with design, operations, purchasing, and commercial functions.
  • Comfort working on projects across multiple regions, including North and South America.
Work Environment

This role is based in an engineering office environment, working closely with a team of approximately 12 professionals focused on gas and steam turbine projects. The work involves extensive use of engineering documentation, P&IDs, I/O lists, technical specifications, and industry-standard design and modeling tools, as well as interaction with various control system platforms such as Netmation, MK5, MK6, Complicity, T3000, R3000, Simatic, Ovation, and Delta V. The position includes collaboration with internal engineering, operations, purchasing, and commercial teams, as well as regular communication with clients, suppliers, and contractors. Occasional travel of up to about 15% is expected for site visits, vendor meetings, FATs, and on-site troubleshooting or commissioning activities. The environment emphasizes technical excellence, project delivery, and long-term project pipelines in the gas and steam turbine sector.

Job Type & Location

This is a Permanent position based out of Lake Mary, FL.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $110000.00 - $135000.00/yr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
