Job Description
The Substation Drafter/Designer joins a dedicated Substation Design team and plays a key role in supporting a variety of engineering and construction projects. This position focuses on creating, modifying, and maintaining detailed design plans and drawings using computer-aided design (CAD) software, working under the guidance of designers and engineers. The role requires strong attention to detail, adherence to established drafting standards, and a collaborative approach within a growing, team-oriented environment.
Responsibilities
- Create, edit, and modify detailed CAD drawings for substation and related power delivery projects.
- Apply established company CAD standards, practices, and procedures when developing and revising drawings.
- Collaborate closely with designers, engineers, and other team members in a supportive, team-based environment.
- Coordinate the filing, storage, and retrieval of drawings and related project documents to maintain organized records.
- Work with extreme precision and accuracy to ensure design drawings meet quality and technical requirements.
- Plot, review, and check drawings for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with project specifications.
- Support substation physical design activities, including layouts for equipment, conduit, wiring, and related components, as directed.
- Assist with documentation and design tasks related to switchgear, power delivery, power distribution, and high-voltage equipment.
- Incorporate feedback from engineers and project managers into updated drawings and design documents.
- Demonstrate flexibility by taking on additional drafting and design duties as assigned to support project and team needs.
Essential Skills
- Minimum of 2+ years of drafting or CAD experience in substation design or closely related engineering and construction work, OR completion of an associate-level program in Drafting and Design, Electrical Engineering, or Engineering Technology.
- High school diploma or equivalent education.
- Proficiency with AutoCAD and/or MicroStation for creating and modifying engineering drawings.
- Basic mathematical skills and strong analytical abilities to interpret design requirements and technical information.
- High attention to detail with a commitment to accuracy and quality in all drawings and documents.
- Self-motivated, proactive work style with the ability to function effectively as a team player.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Adobe Acrobat or Bluebeam for documentation and communication.
- Willingness to learn, grow, and adapt to evolving project needs and industry practices.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Associate’s degree in Drafting and Design or Engineering is preferred.
- Experience with 3D modeling tools such as Revit, Civil 3D, Inventor, or similar software.
- Exposure to or experience with MicroStation, Revit, and other CAD platforms beyond AutoCAD.
- Substation physical design experience, including layouts for equipment, conduit, and wiring, is a plus.
- Familiarity with Substation Design Suite (SDS) and related substation engineering tools is a plus.
- Understanding of power delivery, power distribution, high-voltage systems, switches, insulation, load considerations, and lightning protection concepts is beneficial.
- Knowledge of conduit routing, physical design practices, and utility design principles is advantageous.
- Basic project management awareness related to design deliverables and documentation is a plus.
- Good knowledge of industry and technology trends specific to substations is preferred.
- Familiarity with the National Electrical Code (NEC) and National Electrical Safety Code (NESC) is preferred.
- Strong collaboration skills and the ability to contribute positively to the team with a supportive culture.
Work Environment
This role is part of a close-knit team of approximately 16 engineers and designers focused on substation projects. The position is based in Lake Mary, FL, just north of Orlando, in an office environment that is actively growing and planning to relocate to accommodate expansion. The team emphasizes an energetic culture with strong collaboration and opportunities for professional development. Typical work is performed in a modern office setting using CAD and engineering software, standard office productivity tools, and digital document management systems. Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract to Hire position based out of Lake Mary, FL.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $25.00 - $28.00/hr.
Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
