Job Description

The Cutter Grinder sets up and operates a variety of grinding equipment to perform precision smoothing, sharpening, polishing, and grinding of cutting tools, including drills, reamers, end mills, slab mills, and slotting cutters made from high-speed steel and solid carbide. This role creates or modifies cutting tools from blueprints or written instructions, modifies tool holders and boring bars, and ensures all tooling meets exact specifications through careful inspection and measurement.

Responsibilities
  • Set up and operate grinding and CNC equipment to recondition and modify cutting tools
  • Grind and inspect tools, including drills, end mills, and reamers, to meet specifications and tolerances
  • Read and interpret blueprints and written instructions to determine tooling requirements
  • Adjust machine settings, speeds, and feeds as needed to achieve quality standards
  • Monitor machine operations and troubleshoot issues as they arise
  • Perform basic machine maintenance and replace worn tooling when necessary
  • Use precision measuring instruments, including micrometers and calipers, to perform quality inspections
  • Maintain coolant systems to ensure efficient machine operation
  • Support CNC programming, documentation, and general shop operations
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment
Essential Skills
  • 2–4 years of CNC machining or tool grinding experience
  • Ability to program CNC machines (grinding experience preferred)
  • Strong blueprint reading and interpretation skills
  • Experience using grinders and precision measuring equipment
  • Proficiency with micrometers, calipers, and other inspection tools
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills
  • Basic computer skills
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality standards

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Carol Stream, IL.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $25.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
