CNC Operator
Job Description
This CNC Operator role focuses on operating horizontal milling centers in a clean, well-organized, climate-controlled environment. You will work closely with a Set Up Machinist to ensure machines are properly running, load and unload parts, and perform precise quality checks using micrometers, calipers, and other gauges. As you demonstrate initiative, you will receive training on machine set ups and first piece inspections, helping to ensure accurate dimensions, efficient production, and adherence to strict quality standards.
Responsibilities- Work collaboratively with a Set Up Machinist to ensure horizontal milling centers are properly set up and running efficiently.
- Load and unload parts from CNC machines while maintaining safe and organized work practices.
- Perform first piece inspections to verify that all dimensions are accurately set before production runs begin.
- Conduct regular quality checks using micrometers, calipers, and other precision measuring tools to ensure parts meet specification.
- Read and interpret blueprints, work orders, and engineering drawings to determine proper machine specifications and machining requirements.
- Operate horizontal milling centers, primarily 5-axis and 6-axis DMG and H4000 machines (2014 and newer), with typical run times between 30 minutes and 1 hour 10 minutes.
- Handle and machine different materials such as aluminum and ductile iron according to process requirements.
- Develop understanding of and eventually execute basic G and M code functions to support machine operation.
- Support high and efficient production output while maintaining all quality standards and documentation requirements.
- Assist with and learn CNC set up tasks as training and experience progress.
- 1 to 3 years of experience in CNC machining in an operator role, preferably on horizontal milling centers.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, work orders, and engineering drawings accurately.
- Proficiency in using micrometers, calipers, and other gauges to perform precise measurements and quality checks.
- Experience operating CNC mills and machining equipment in a production or job shop environment.
- Basic understanding of CNC machining processes, including metal cutting and milling operations.
- Ability to work with multi-axis CNC machines and adapt to 5-axis and 6-axis machining centers.
- High School Diploma or technical school education preferred but not required.
- Experience with horizontal milling centers, including DMG and H4000 brands, is highly beneficial.
- Background working with CNC lathes, vertical mills, grinders, and other metal cutting equipment.
- Familiarity with Mastercam or similar CAM software for programming and toolpath generation.
- Exposure to controls and systems such as Haas and Fanuc on CNC machines.
- Experience in a job shop environment, handling a variety of machining tasks and materials.
- Knowledge of G and M codes and willingness to further develop programming skills.
- Comfort working with aluminum, ductile iron, and other metals in machining applications.
- Interest in building tools, performing CNC set ups, and expanding into more advanced machinist responsibilities.
You will join a supportive team in a clean, climate-controlled facility that is committed to continuous improvement and making processes better. The environment encourages learning and growth, offering opportunities to expand from operating into set up and more advanced machining skills. With a focus on organization, quality, and collaboration, you can build your technical capabilities while working in a modern, well-equipped shop that is investing in new machinery and future expansion.
Work EnvironmentThe facility is medium-sized, very clean, well laid out, and highly organized, providing a comfortable and professional setting for precision machining. The shop is climate controlled, helping maintain consistent working conditions and part quality. You will work with a fleet of modern horizontal milling centers, primarily 5-axis and 6-axis DMG and H4000 machines from 2014 and newer, with approximately eight machines currently in operation and plans to add two to three more by the end of the year. The environment includes CNC mills, lathes, grinders, and equipment using controls such as Haas and Fanuc, as well as software like Mastercam, supporting a technologically advanced and efficient machining operation.
