Full-Time | Monday–Friday | 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.
Pay Range: $16.00–$22.00 per hour

Eastern Shore Eye Care is seeking a dependable, patient-focused Ophthalmic / Optometric Technician to join our practice in Fairhope, Alabama.
Previous eye-care experience is preferred, but not required. We are open to training the right candidate who brings strong transferable skills, enjoys working with patients, and is motivated to learn and grow in a clinical environment.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced ophthalmic or optometric technician, as well as someone coming from another healthcare or patient-facing role who wants to build a career in eye care.
As an Ophthalmic / Optometric Technician, you will work closely with our doctors to gather accurate clinical information, perform diagnostic testing, prepare patients for their examinations, and help keep the clinic running efficiently.
Most importantly, you will help patients feel comfortable, informed, and well cared for throughout their visit.
What You’ll Do
Prepare Patients for Their Exams
- Welcome patients and help create a comfortable, professional experience.
- Collect and document medical and ocular histories, medications, allergies, and vision concerns.
- Perform pre-testing and prepare patients for examination by the doctor.
- Recognize and communicate abnormal or potentially urgent findings to the clinical team.
Perform Ophthalmic Testing
- Perform diagnostic testing including OCT imaging, visual fields, retinal photography, autorefraction, keratometry, lensometry, NCT, and other testing as needed.
- Ensure images and test results are accurate, properly documented, and entered into the patient record.
- Maintain clinical equipment and promptly communicate equipment or testing issues.
- Learn and follow established testing procedures to ensure consistent, accurate results.
Educate and Support Patients
- Provide contact lens insertion and removal training.
- Educate patients on proper contact lens care and safe lens-wearing habits.
- Answer patient questions within the scope of the role and reinforce instructions provided by the doctor.
- Help patients feel comfortable and confident throughout the testing and examination process.
Support an Efficient Practice
- Assist with patient flow, scheduling, referrals, and follow-up coordination.
- Communicate effectively with doctors, patients, coworkers, and outside providers.
- Maintain organized exam rooms and clinical work areas.
- Assist with additional clinical and administrative responsibilities as needed.

Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability and willingness to learn clinical procedures and ophthalmic equipment.
- Professional verbal and written communication skills.
- Dependable, responsible, and team-oriented approach.
- Basic computer skills and ability to learn electronic health record (EHR) systems.
- Ability to stay organized and manage responsibilities in a fast-paced environment.
- Commitment to providing an excellent patient experience.
Preferred Experience
Previous ophthalmic or optometric experience is preferred, but not required. Eastern Shore Eye Care is open to training the right candidate who brings strong transferable skills, a patient-focused mindset, and a willingness to learn.
Candidates may come from backgrounds such as:
- Ophthalmic or optometric technician
- Medical assistant
- Patient care technician
- Dental assistant
- Medical office or clinical support
- Other healthcare or patient-facing roles with transferable skills
Experience with any of the following is a plus, but not required:
- OCT and retinal imaging
- Visual field testing
- Autorefraction and keratometry
- Lensometry and NCT
- Contact lens training and patient education
- Ophthalmic or optometric terminology
- Electronic health records (EHR)
CPO, CPOA, CPOT, or other ophthalmic/paraoptometric certification is also a plus, but not required.
