Job Title: Metal Production Shop Assistant

Job Description

This role supports a busy manufacturing operation by assisting machine operators, building shipping crates, and handling material movement throughout the shop. You contribute directly to meeting production goals by serving as an extra set of hands on the production floor, ensuring finished products are accurately measured, safely handled, and efficiently packed and shipped.

Responsibilities

  • Support machine operators on bending machines by loading flats onto the machine, assisting with removal after bending, and stacking finished pieces, including handling parts typically 10 feet long and up to 12 feet long with weights around 30 pounds.
  • Read tape measures accurately to measure boards and cut them to size for building simple wood shipping crates and frames used to ship finished sheet metal trim.
  • Build sturdy and properly sized shipping crates and frames to protect finished material during transport.
  • Operate a forklift (after training and certification) to move rolls of material around the shop, including loading rolls into the slitter machine and transferring finished product from bending machines to the shipping area.
  • Handle materials safely and efficiently, maintaining smooth material flow through slitter and bending operations.
  • Perform general production and general labor tasks as needed to help the team meet daily output and quality targets.
  • Work in a repetitive production environment, consistently producing the same parts while rotating between machine assistance, crate building, and forklift operation to keep workflow balanced.
  • Follow established production procedures and safety guidelines to ensure high-quality output and a safe work environment.
  • Contribute to achieving daily production goals of trim parts, supporting the team in maintaining and improving output levels.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area within the shop to support efficient and safe operations.

Essential Skills

  • Ability to read and use a tape measure accurately for cutting boards and measuring materials.
  • Capability to lift and handle material weighing around 30 pounds, including parts up to 10–12 feet in length.
  • Willingness to be trained and certified in forklift operation and to use a forklift regularly for material handling.
  • Comfort working in a repetitive production environment while maintaining focus on quality and efficiency.
  • Basic production and general labor skills, including following instructions and working to defined processes.
  • Attention to detail to ensure accurate measurements, proper crate construction, and correct handling of sheet metal trim.
  • Commitment to meeting production goals and maintaining high quality standards.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Previous sheet metal experience is a plus.
  • Experience in general production, machine operation, or material handling is beneficial.
  • Experience using slitter machines or bending machines in a manufacturing setting is an advantage.
  • Comfort working with industrial metal building components or similar products is helpful.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a small production team.

Why Work Here?

You join a small, close-knit crew of about five people where teamwork and mutual support are central to the daily workflow. The role offers a consistent first-shift schedule, Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., supporting work-life balance with predictable hours. You work in a clean, well-organized facility with semi climate-controlled conditions, giving you a comfortable environment to grow your skills in production, material handling, and forklift operation.

Work Environment

The facility produces material for industrial metal buildings, primarily for cold storage applications, focusing solely on trim components rather than panels. The plant is clean, well laid out, and provides ample space to move around safely and efficiently. Air movers and semi climate-controlled conditions contribute to a comfortable workspace. You work a fixed first shift, Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with two paid 15-minute breaks and a 30-minute unpaid lunch. The environment is production-focused and repetitive, with a goal of producing 1,000 trim parts per day and an ideal output of 1,500–1,800 parts daily, supported by a small team that values coordination and a strong teamwork atmosphere.
