Laboratory Lead
Job Description
This role oversees day-to-day operations in a laboratory setting, leading a small team, coordinating workstations and tasks, and ensuring accurate preparation, testing, and documentation of laboratory analyses. The position combines hands-on laboratory work with supervisory responsibilities, equipment maintenance, and support for budgeting and material procurement.
Responsibilities- Lead and supervise a team of 3–4 laboratory staff in a fast-paced laboratory environment.
- Set up workstations each day and assign tasks to team members based on workload and priorities.
- Prepare laboratory solutions and reagents in accordance with established procedures and safety standards.
- Perform a variety of instrumental and wet chemical tests to support laboratory analyses.
- Accurately document all test results and findings in the company database and maintain organized records.
- Set up, calibrate, and maintain all laboratory equipment to ensure proper operation and reliability.
- Train new laboratory employees on procedures, safety protocols, equipment use, and documentation standards.
- Monitor inventory levels and order materials, supplies, and reagents needed for laboratory operations.
- Assist in managing and monitoring the laboratory budget, including cost control and resource allocation.
- Perform occasional heavy lifting as needed to move equipment, materials, or supplies within the lab.
- At least 3 years of hands-on laboratory experience that includes supervisory responsibilities.
- Strong laboratory skills in both instrumental analysis and wet chemical testing.
- Proven supervisory skills with the ability to lead, coach, and develop a small laboratory team.
- Ability to prepare solutions and reagents accurately and safely.
- Competence in documenting test results and maintaining data in a laboratory database.
- Experience setting up, calibrating, and maintaining laboratory equipment.
- Capability to manage daily workflow, assign tasks, and oversee multiple concurrent analyses.
- Physical ability to perform heavy lifting when required in the laboratory.
- Bachelor of Science degree in Laboratory Science, Chemistry, or a closely related field.
- Experience training new laboratory employees on procedures and safety practices.
- Comfort with ordering materials and supplies and supporting laboratory budget management.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to accurate data recording and quality standards.
- Effective communication skills for collaborating with team members and sharing results.
- Organizational skills to manage schedules, inventory, and documentation efficiently.

Work EnvironmentThe role is based in a laboratory setting on a first-shift schedule from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with no weekend work and only a light possibility of occasional overtime after the regular shift. Team members are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing and sturdy shoes or boots suitable for a laboratory environment. The work involves using a range of laboratory instruments and equipment, handling reagents and solutions, and occasionally performing heavy lifting. The environment emphasizes safety, precision, and collaboration while maintaining predictable hours and a structured daily routine.
Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract to Hire position based out of Billings, MT.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $31.00 - $31.00/hr.
Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
