Job Description
Phlebotomist
Job Summary:
Performs phlebotomy, specimen collection, accessioning, processing, and distribution. Ensures accurate specimen identification, proper handling, and timely delivery for laboratory testing while maintaining patient safety and quality standards.
Essential Duties:
Performs venipunctures and finger sticks to collect blood specimens.
Verifies patient identification, specimen type, volume, and labeling.
Processes and prepares specimens for laboratory and reference testing.
Explains procedures to patients and obtains required information.
Communicates with physicians, departments, and laboratory staff to ensure efficient workflow.
Performs difficult recollections and follows established specimen collection procedures.
Maintains equipment and supplies; monitors inventory and expiration dates.
Performs quality control and proficiency testing as required.
Participates in quality assurance and performance improvement activities.
Follows safety, infection control, regulatory, and departmental standards.
Requirements:
High School Diploma/GED or equivalent – Required in CA, preferred in Oregon and Hawaii
Associate’s/Technical Degree – Preferred.
CPT I/CPT II or MLT License – Required in CA, preferred in Oregon and Hawaii
Previous phlebotomy and specimen collection experience preferred.
