EDM Machinist
Job Description
EDM Machinist
At our Talent HRizon client, quality, craftsmanship, and collaboration are at the center of everything they do. Their modern, clean manufacturing environment is equipped with advanced machining and EDM technologies designed to produce highly precise components and tooling.
This is an environment where experienced machinists can take pride in their work, solve technical challenges, and contribute to products where accuracy and quality matter. The organization values initiative, reliability, attention to detail, and teamwork.
What We Offer
- Competitive compensation based on experience and technical capability.
- Modern, clean, high-precision manufacturing environment.
- Advanced machining, EDM, inspection, and tooling technologies.
- Stable, long-term employment with a growing organization.
- Opportunity to work on complex, precision components and tooling.
- Collaborative environment focused on quality and continuous improvement.
About the Role
The EDM Machinist is responsible for setting up, operating, and maintaining EDM equipment to manufacture high-precision components, tooling, mold components, and related parts.
This position requires strong knowledge of EDM machining principles, precision measurement, technical drawings, and machining practices. The ideal candidate is comfortable working independently on detailed setups while maintaining extremely tight dimensional and surface-finish requirements.
Depending on experience and equipment configuration, the role may involve Wire EDM, Sinker EDM, or both.
Key Responsibilities
- Set up and operate Wire EDM and/or Sinker EDM equipment to produce precision components and tooling.
- Interpret engineering drawings, CAD models, specifications, and GD&T requirements.
- Determine appropriate machine setups, workholding, electrodes, wire, tooling, and machining parameters.
- Accurately locate and indicate workpieces before machining.
- Perform machine setup, alignment, zeroing, and verification before production.
- Monitor EDM operations and make adjustments to maintain dimensional accuracy, surface finish, and quality requirements.
- Machine hardened tool steels, stainless steels, carbide, and other conductive materials as required.
- Perform in-process and final dimensional inspections using precision measuring equipment.
- Troubleshoot machining, setup, electrode, wire, flushing, and dimensional issues.
- Maintain EDM equipment through routine cleaning, preventive maintenance, and inspection.
- Document setups, machining parameters, inspection results, and process improvements.
- Work closely with CNC machinists, toolmakers, programmers, engineers, and quality personnel.
- Maintain an organized, clean, and safe work area.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives related to machining efficiency, quality, tooling, and setup reduction.
Who Are You?
You are an experienced EDM Machinist who takes pride in producing highly accurate components. You understand that successful EDM work requires patience, precision, strong setup skills, and careful attention to detail.
You are comfortable reading complex technical drawings, working with tight tolerances, inspecting your own work, and troubleshooting machining problems. You enjoy working in a precision manufacturing environment where quality is expected rather than inspected into the product afterward.
What You Bring
- 3+ years of EDM machining or closely related precision machining experience.
- Hands-on experience operating and setting up Wire EDM and/or Sinker EDM machines.
- Strong understanding of EDM machining principles and processes.
- Ability to independently perform machine setups and workpiece alignment.
- Strong blueprint and technical drawing interpretation skills.
- Working knowledge of GD&T.
- Experience working with tight dimensional tolerances and precision components.
- Ability to use precision inspection equipment such as:
- Micrometers
- Calipers
- Height gauges
- Indicators
- Gauge blocks
- Optical or vision measurement equipment
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving ability.
- Ability to maintain accurate machining and inspection documentation.
Nice to Have Knowledge Of
- Experience with precision moldmaking, injection mold components, dies, tooling, or medical-device tooling.
- Experience machining hardened tool steels and carbide.
- Experience with both Wire EDM and Sinker EDM.
- Experience producing electrodes or working with graphite and copper electrodes.
- Familiarity with EDM programming or CAM software.
- Experience with automated or unattended EDM machining.
- Experience with high-precision workholding systems such as System 3R or Erowa.
- Experience working in an environment requiring extremely tight tolerances and high-quality surface finishes.
- Familiarity with CMM, vision systems, or other advanced inspection equipment.
Programming & Technical Responsibilities
- Interpret 3D CAD models, 2D prints, and detailed manufacturing drawings.
- Load, verify, and execute EDM programs.
- Make appropriate program, offset, or machine-setting adjustments when necessary.
- Establish workpiece datums and accurately locate features prior to machining.
- Select appropriate EDM parameters based on material, geometry, tolerance, and surface-finish requirements.
- Develop or assist with machining strategies for complex geometry, deep cavities, narrow features, and precision surfaces.
- Collaborate with programmers and engineers to improve machining processes and reduce cycle time while maintaining quality.
- Verify completed components against engineering drawings and inspection requirements.
The Environment
Our Talent HRizon client is looking for individuals who want to build a career in high-precision manufacturing, not simply operate a machine. If you enjoy technically challenging work, advanced manufacturing technology, and producing components where precision matters, this opportunity is worth exploring.
