Responsibilities

The Certified Medication Aide (CMA) administers medications to residents as ordered by the attending physician, under the direction of the Charge Nurse and Director of Nursing. Medication administration is performed in accordance with established nursing standards, facility policies and procedures, and applicable state requirements.

  • Accurately and safely prepare, administer, and document oral and/or topical medications as ordered by the attending physician, per state and federal guidelines.
  • Adhere to the 5 rights of medication administration (right resident, right mediation, right does, right route, right time)
  • Observe and document medication administration, including any refusals, omissions, or errors, and promptly notify the Charge Nurse.
  • Monitor medication supply levels and coordinate with the Charge Nurse to ensure adequate stock is maintained.
  • Adhere to controlled substances, narcotic recordkeeping, and medication destruction requirements per state and federal guidelines.
  • Assist with activities of daily living (ADLs) and provide CNA-level care as needed and directed.
  • Participate in quality assurance and process improvement activities as requested.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Charge Nurse or Director of Nursing.

Qualifications

  • Current Medication Aide Certification and Nursing Assistant Certification in the state of practice.
  • Strong attention to detail with accurate medication preparation and documentation skills.
  • Knowledge of facility policies and applicable state regulations governing medication administration.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a nursing team and under the direction of licensed nursing staff.
  • Customer service oriented with the ability to work well under pressure.
  • Approachable, flexible, and adaptable to change.
  • Familiarity with electronic health records (EHR) systems preferred.
