Mechanical Engineer


Position Summary

The Mechanical Engineer will support the design, development, installation, and operation of process and pilot plant systems. This position will be responsible for designing piping systems, preparing supporting drawings and documentation, performing engineering calculations, developing bills of materials, and coordinating with fabrication teams to ensure construction meets design specifications. The ideal candidate will be mechanically inclined, comfortable working in a hands-on engineering environment, and capable of supporting both engineering design activities and pilot plant operations. This opportunity is well suited for an entry-level or early-career Mechanical Engineer looking to gain hands-on experience with process systems and demonstration-scale operations.


Key Responsibilities

  • Design piping systems in accordance with ASME B31.3 requirements.
  • Prepare supporting engineering details, drawings, and documentation.
  • Perform routine mechanical design and engineering calculations.
  • Support process integration from the design phase through installation and implementation.
  • Develop and maintain Bills of Materials (BOMs) for implemented systems.
  • Specify appropriate instrumentation and mechanical components for process systems.
  • Update and maintain unit P&IDs.
  • Assist with mechanical and electrical system integration as required.
  • Assist with and supervise pilot plant operations and plant design activities.
  • Perform thermodynamic calculations in support of system and process design.
  • Validate completed construction and installations against engineering drawings and specifications.
  • Communicate regularly with fabrication teams throughout the design, construction, and installation process.
  • Provide hands-on support in the construction and modification of process systems.
  • Support operations within a 24/7 pilot plant or facility environment.
  • Perform additional engineering and operational duties as required.

Required Education, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering required.
  • 0 years of experience required; up to 2+ years of related experience preferred.
  • Working knowledge of SolidWorks.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft Office applications.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Visio.
  • Familiarity with ANSYS preferred.
  • Ability to perform thermodynamic and routine mechanical engineering calculations.
  • Basic understanding of electrical and mechanical systems.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude with the ability to assist in building and modifying process systems.
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments and priorities simultaneously.
  • Strong written communication and technical documentation skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with engineering, fabrication, and operations teams.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Technical experience or academic exposure to Finite Element Analysis (FEA).
  • Experience with or knowledge of thermal simulations.
  • Experience with ANSYS or similar engineering analysis software.
  • Previous experience with demonstration-scale or pilot plant operations.
  • Experience developing or updating P&IDs.
  • Exposure to process piping design and ASME B31.3 standards.
  • Hands-on experience building, installing, or troubleshooting mechanical/process systems.

Physical Requirements & Work Environment

  • Work will be performed in plant, laboratory, and high-bay environments.
  • Must be able to stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Must be able to climb stairs and ladders.
  • Must be comfortable working outdoors and in varying weather conditions.
  • Worksites are located throughout an approximately 1,500-acre property, and employees may be required to walk between work locations.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds unassisted.
  • Lifting over 50 pounds must be performed with assistance.
  • Steel-toe safety shoes are required.
  • Must comply with all applicable facility and workplace safety requirements.

Additional Requirements

  • Local candidates preferred.
  • Must be able to successfully clear Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) requirements.
  • This position is considered safety-sensitive.
  • Must be willing and able to work varying shifts in support of a 24/7 facility.
  • Regular day shift is generally 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
  • Overtime may be required based on operational and project needs.
  • Shift work will be required as necessary.
  • Dress code is business casual, with appropriate PPE required when working in designated plant, laboratory, fabrication, or outdoor areas.
