Description
The Sr. Metrology Engineer II will join the Division Quality - Metrology group and provide technical leadership for metrology technology transfer from R&D to production. This role will lead metrology projects from concept through implementation, supporting R&D-to-manufacturing transfer, production readiness, gauge development, system qualification, deployment, and production release.
Duties:
- Lead metrology projects from concept through implementation, including metrology planning, gauge development, system qualification, deployment, and production release.
- Collaborate with QA, engineering, manufacturing, software, controls, and other cross-functional teams to implement robust measurement solutions.
- Develop metrology strategies addressing gauge capability, capacity, lead time, cost, and long-term capability requirements.
- Survey, develop, deploy, and qualify new gauges and measurement systems for critical product characteristics, including defects, dimensional attributes, weight, reliability, optical performance, mechanical characteristics, and other critical product attributes.
- Design, improve, and validate test methods using existing metrology systems.
- Support the design and development of fixtures, tooling, and equipment used in metrology systems.
- Develop measurement data reporting, traceability, usability, and data analysis applications for new gauges and test methods.
- Partner with controls and software engineers to develop operator interfaces, data collection systems, and databases supporting effective measurement system utilization.
- Prepare engineering and operational work instructions for gauges and measurement systems.
- Prepare measurement system development and qualification reports.
- Train users and provide technical support for deployed metrology systems.
- Provide second-level technical troubleshooting for metrology issues, conduct root cause analysis, and implement sustainable corrective actions.
- Lead metrology governance activities, including gauge alignment, standardization, and Measurement System Analysis (MSA) across internal plants, contract manufacturers, and customer sites as needed.
- Evaluate existing gauge capability and capacity and drive continuous improvement and long-term metrology capability development.
- Provide technical leadership and expertise in metrology-related problem solving and production support.
- Travel domestically approximately 5% depending on project stage and schedule.
Requirements:
- Strong knowledge of metrology principles, including calibration traceability, measurement uncertainty, and gauge qualification methods.
- Knowledge and practical understanding of Measurement System Analysis (MSA).
- Experience developing, qualifying, deploying, and supporting measurement systems and gauges.
- Strong problem-solving, root cause analysis, and continuous improvement skills.
- Basic statistical analysis and technical reporting capabilities.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools.
- Familiarity with Minitab and/or Origin.
- Familiarity with MATLAB and/or Python.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional technical teams.
- Machine vision experience is a plus.
- Experience working in a test laboratory or with inspection system development is a plus.
Qualifications
- Demonstrated experience in metrology engineering, measurement systems, gauge development, qualification, or a closely related discipline.
- Working knowledge of calibration traceability, measurement uncertainty, gauge capability, and MSA.
- Experience supporting the transition of measurement technologies from development/R&D environments into production.
- Experience with data analysis, measurement reporting, and technical documentation.
- Ability to work onsite in Harrodsburg, KY and support project requirements during standard business hours.
- Ability to work approximately 40 hours per week, with additional hours as required to successfully deliver projects and support operational requirements.
