ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES of a Certified Occupational Therapist Assistant (COTA) (not meant to be an all inclusive list)
- Provides activities of daily living assessments and screens residents to determine if occupational therapy services are warranted.
- Renders the established needs of individual resident occupational therapy treatment programs under the general supervision of an occupational therapist. Assures treatment programs and goals are modified as needed.
- Communicates occupational therapy philosophy and treatment approaches and goals to residents, families, and other members of the interdisciplinary team.
- Maintains appropriate documentation per regulatory guidelines. Prepares and submits all clinical billing in a timely manner.
- Develops and instructs residents and their support members in home programs as needed. Provides home safety assessments and recommendations as needed.
- Develops and maintains rapport and communication with physicians, facility staff, family members/significant others and community agencies to ensure effective exchange of information regarding current and future program planning.
- Maintains daily productivity standard of 85%.
- Assists with supervision and utilization of rehab and restorative aides in accordance with WI Practice Act.
- Ensures representation at resident related meetings.
- Relays inventory needs of occupational therapy supplies and equipment to Rehab Aide and Director of Rehab to assist in adequate availability.
- Exercises independent judgment effectively and make sound decisions within scope of WI Practice Act for occupational therapy services.
- Meets the annual goals and objectives that are consistent with the values and mission of Oakwood Village and continuous quality improvement.
- Maintains knowledge of current reimbursement and regulatory issues regarding rehabilitation.
- Attends required in-services and continuing education programs.
- Willingness to work a flexible schedule including weekends and holidays as needed. Work hours vary dependent upon patient need and caseload.
ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS of a Certified Occupational Therapist Assistant (COTA)
- Provides inspiring leadership through example, planning, teaching, training and empowerment.
- Demonstrates excellent communication skills to include: written, oral, public speaking, listening and nonverbal.
- Works independently with little supervision and is sensitive to the needs of many constituents. Uses sound judgment and diplomacy in performance of duties.
- Proficient knowledge of the fundamentals of individual and group activities; occupational, physical and speech therapies with an older adult population.
- Proficient Knowledge of the scope of practice for occupational therapy.
- Understands and has worked with reimbursement sources, including Medicare A (PPS), Medicare B, Medicaid and private insurance.
- Presents occupational therapy objectives at general and professional levels.
- Trustworthy, dependable, and ethical with willingness to accept feedback and the ability to cooperate.
- Exhibits a sincere desire to work with older adults and has a growing understanding of the aging process.
EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION AND/ OR TRAINING of a Certified Occupational Therapist Assistant (COTA)
- Graduate of an accredited Occupational Therapy Assistant program.
- Current licensure as a certified occupational therapy assistant in the State of Wisconsin.
- Minimum of two years therapist experience preferred.
- Long-term care experience preferred.
