The Greater Vallejo Recreation District invites applications for:


Position: Recreation Leader 1 Department: Recreation

Salary Range: $17.00 - $17.50


The Greater Vallejo Recreation District is a Special Service District that has been serving area residents for over sixty years. As a Special Service District, GVRD operates as a separate government agency from the City of Vallejo. GVRD manages 407 acres of public park space including 20 neighborhood parks, 10 community parks, 6 special purpose parks, and Olympic-size swimming pool and 4 community centers. GVRD maintains over 1,000 acres of public land.


GVRD is governed by a five-member Board of Directors. With 30 plus full time and approximately 155 part-time and seasonal employees, GVRD operates on a 2026-2027 fiscal year budget of $12.9 million for general fund operations and Measure K funding amounting to $2.2 million. The Measure K funding is being utilized to purchase necessary equipment, improve parks, facilities.


RECREATION LEADER 1

Class Specifications are intended to present a descriptive list of the range of duties performed by employees in the class. Specifications are not intended to reflect all duties performed within the job.


DEFINITION

To maintain a safe, welcoming, and enjoyable park environment for children and families; to lead in recreation activities; and to perform a variety of tasks in support of programming and operations at Children's Wonderland Park and Community Events.


SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives immediate supervision from higher level staff.


ESSENTIAL AND MARGINAL FUNCTION STATEMENTS-Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to the following:
1. Implement and supervise various recreational activities, including sports, crafts, games, and field trips.
2. May collect monthly fees; issue receipts; maintain record of enrollment and fees paid.
3. Lead recreational activities; supervise children; enforce safety rules and guidelines.
4. Resolve conflicts among children.
5. Monitor activities within a facility and/or outside; provide information to the public on program activities.
6. Respond to parent, school or community concerns and issues; direct to higher level staff, as necessary.
7. Perform first aid as necessary.


Marginal Functions:
1. Assist in the general cleaning and upkeep of facilities.
2. Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.


QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:
1. General recreation principles and practices.
2. Rules and regulations of age appropriate recreation activities.
3. Basic art and craft techniques, games, and sports.


Ability to:
1. Learn recreation activities, rules and regulations.
2. Respond to requests and inquires from the general public.
3. Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
4. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
5. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
6. Work effectively under the supervision of the Senior Recreation Leader.
7. Attend meetings and trainings related to work.


Experience and Training Guidelines:
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge
and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:


Experience:
Some experience with youth recreation programs or childcare settings is desirable.


Training:
None required.


Education/License or Certificate
C.P.R. and First Aid Certification or the ability to obtain within six months of hire date.


Minimum age:
Must be at least 16 years of age to apply.

Environmental Conditions:

Indoor and outdoor facilities; exposure to noise, dust, heat, cold, and inclement weather conditions; working with young children, teenagers, and clients with special needs.

Physical Demands:

Essential and marginal functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for occasional moderate or light lifting; bending, stooping, kneeling, crawling; walking for prolonged periods of time; standing for prolonged periods of time.
