Location: Durham, NC, 27707
Duration: 12-Month Contract
Pay Rate: $53- $56/hr. on W2

Job Description:

Position Summary:

We are seeking an experienced Principal Project/Program Manager to lead high-complexity projects and strategic initiatives within the healthcare industry. The ideal candidate will have 10+ years of project/program management experience with a strong track record of leading large-scale programs, managing multiple workstreams, and delivering successful business and technology initiatives.

The successful candidate will be a strategic and proactive leader with strong stakeholder management, executive communication, problem-solving, and cross-functional leadership skills. This individual must be comfortable working in a highly matrixed environment, managing ambiguity, and driving alignment across multiple teams and business functions.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage large-scale, complex projects and programs with multiple concurrent workstreams.
  • Serve as the primary coordination point between business, technology, operations, and external delivery partners.
  • Develop and manage project plans, timelines, milestones, deliverables, dependencies, and resource requirements.
  • Ensure business and technology deliverables are completed, reviewed, and approved according to established project schedules.
  • Manage resources across multiple delivery partners while ensuring projects remain within approved scope, timelines, and allocated hours.
  • Provide strategic leadership, direction, and accountability throughout the project and program lifecycle.
  • Proactively identify and manage risks, issues, dependencies, and competing priorities.
  • Lead cross-functional teams across IT/Technology, Operations, Finance, Compliance, Legal, Customer Service, Training, and other business functions.
  • Build and maintain effective relationships with Directors, VPs, executives, and key stakeholders.
  • Influence decisions, resolve conflicts, and drive alignment across teams with competing priorities.
  • Deliver clear and concise executive-level status reports, presentations, recommendations, and project updates.
  • Lead governance meetings, steering committees, project reviews, and executive leadership forums.
  • Establish structure and direction in complex or ambiguous situations while proactively anticipating potential challenges.
  • Ensure effective integration and coordination across multiple project workstreams.
  • Mentor and provide feedback to project team members to promote a high-performing team environment.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvement and drive continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Support the successful implementation of business and technology solutions and ensure alignment with organizational objectives.


Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or advanced degree, where required.
  • 10+ years of experience in project or program management.
  • Proven experience leading large-scale, complex programs with multiple concurrent workstreams.
  • Demonstrated leadership, decision-making, ownership, and accountability.
  • Extensive stakeholder management experience, including direct interaction with Directors, VPs, and executive leadership.
  • Proven ability to influence decisions, resolve complex issues, manage competing priorities, and drive results.
  • Strong cross-functional leadership experience across business and technology organizations.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a highly matrixed environment and manage ambiguity.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead programs from planning through successful implementation and completion.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience leading system implementations and business transformation programs.
  • Experience managing governance forums, steering committees, and executive reporting.
  • Healthcare industry experience, particularly within:
    • Health Plans
    • Healthcare Payers
    • Health Insurance
    • Third-Party Administrators (TPA)
    • Pharmacy Benefit Managers (PBM)
    • Claims
    • Enrollment
    • Benefits Administration
  • Experience managing complex programs involving multiple business, technology, and external delivery partners.
