JOB DESCRIPTION:

First Priority ER is a Freestanding Emergency Room in New Braunfels, TX. Seeking a PRN-RN for a Day shift position.

EDUCATION REQUIRED:

  • Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing
  • Must possess and maintain a current license to practice in Texas
  • Two (2) years’ experience in an ER setting required
  • Two (2) years’ experience in the Freestanding ER preferred.
  • Maintain current BLS, ACLS, PALS (or ENPC in lieu of PALS), CEN encouraged

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Must be able to work in confined spaces and under varying levels of physical and mental stress.
  • The RN must be capable of bending, lifting up to 50 pounds, and standing for extended periods of time.
  • Must demonstrate the willingness and ability to meet all requirements of a 12-hour shift, with or without reasonable accommodations.

POSITION GOAL:

  • The RN performs the functions of assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating the care of patients scheduled for procedures in the ER.
  • The RN is responsible for meeting standards of practice; managing all assigned personnel, supplies, and equipment in the ER; and promoting collaboration with physicians and departmental staff.
  • The RN functions in all nursing areas within the ER as needed.
  • The RN provides proficient, age-specific, and appropriate nursing care to all patients.
  • The RN adheres to required infection control practices, isolation procedures, and aseptic techniques in the delivery of patient care.

STANDARD I: Nursing Process

  • Assists with patient assessments, prepares patients for procedures, and reviews charts for completeness.
  • Ensures proper patient identification by checking the identification band and confirming the patient’s verbal self-identification.
  • Reviews patient charts to ensure all required information has been obtained.
  • Documents any patient allergies to medications and/or food.

STANDARD II: Behavioral and physiological status

  • Assists in reducing patient anxiety.
  • The RN assesses the patient’s level of consciousness and evaluates their psychological status.
  • The RN provides privacy, maintains a quiet environment, and offers emotional support to the patient.

STANDARD III: Professional responsibility and Policy and Procedures

  • Follows all policies, protocols, and procedures established to ensure safe and effective patient care.
  • Documents patient care accurately, including supplies used and any other data required by ER policy.
  • Administers medications as ordered by the physician and in accordance with ER policies and procedures.
  • Organizes the delivery of care in compliance with established ER policies and procedures.

STANDARD IV: General Duties

  • Reports to work regularly and on time and complies with schedule changes as needed.
  • Maintains the confidentiality of patient information and records.
  • Manages potentially stressful situations resulting from schedule changes.
  • Assesses and evaluates patients in accordance with established policies and procedures and communicates abnormal vital signs or symptoms to the physician.
  • Assists in maintaining a clean and organized department.
  • Assists with patient discharge from the facility.
  • Performs all quality assessment activities assigned to the position.
  • Collects laboratory samples and performs lab testing in accordance with established policies and procedures.

STANDARD VI: Education and Training

  • Maintains accountability for continuously improving nursing knowledge and skills (nursing competence).
  • Introduces self to patients and/or family members and explains procedures.
  • Participates in training and continuing education programs.
  • Seeks out new learning experiences for professional development.
  • Ensures completion of annual in-service requirements, including updates in CPR, back safety, fire safety, universal precautions, and Code Blue; CPR certification is renewed every two (2) years.
  • Reviews and adheres to the Policy and Procedure Manual.
  • Administers medications as ordered by the physician.
  • Provides patients with discharge instructions, both verbal and written.
  • The RN understands and follows the chain of command for reporting incidents.
  • Performs other duties as necessary to support the proper function of the department in accordance with policies and procedures.
